On March 25, 2016, in the New York Times op-ed piece “Salute to a Communist,” Arizona senator John McCain wrote to honor the recently deceased Del Berg, the last of the 2,800 U.S. volunteers who had crossed the Atlantic Ocean to fight fascism in Spain eighty years earlier. Berg had been part of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, joining 35,000 other volunteers from fifty other countries to defend the Spanish Republic against the military revolt led by Gen. Francisco Franco. Approximately eight hundred Americans were killed, and almost five hundred thousand Spaniards, before the bloody conflict ended with Franco's victory in March 1939. Some of the stories of the men and women who joined the Lincoln Brigade live on in Adam Hochschild's Spain in Our Hearts. Although subtitled “Americans in the Spanish Civil War,” the book does not focus on the U.S. volunteers in the International Brigades. Instead, Hochschild traces the lives of a select group comprising well-educated and highly literate English speakers (not all from the United States) who were involved in the conflict in myriad ways
