D anielle B attisti . Whom We Shall Welcome: Italian Americans and Immigration Reform, 1945–1965
The title of Danielle Battisti’s book Whom We Shall Welcome: Italian Americans and Immigration Reform, 1945–1965 mirrors that of the report of a special commission established to examine federal policies on immigration and to recommend reforms by President Truman at the end of his time in office. In the report, the commission advocated that the 1924 National Origins Act’s restrictive quota system—which promoted a hierarchy of distinctions based o…
Hidden Out in the Open: Spanish Migration to the United States, 1875-1930
Spanish migration dates back to early colonization. This long diasporic history, however, has traditionally favored the experiences of missionaries and conquistadors over those of wage workers. The essays in this collection address this omission and provide the first comprehensive English-language study of the hundreds of thousands of Spaniards who left their birthplace and journeyed to the United States and its territories mainly in the quarter …

Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939
On March 25, 2016, in the New York Times op-ed piece “Salute to a Communist,” Arizona senator John McCain wrote to honor the recently deceased Del Berg, the last of the 2,800 U.S. volunteers who had crossed the Atlantic Ocean to fight fascism in Spain eighty years earlier. Berg had been part of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War, joining 35,000 other volunteers from fifty other countries to defend the Spanish Republic agains…
The Asaba massacre and the Nigerian civil war: Reclaiming Hidden History
This article explores the consequences of a massacre of civilians in Asaba, a town on the west bank of the river Niger, during the early stages of the Nigerian civil war. While ethnically Igbo, Asaba was not part of the Igbo-dominated Biafra, remaining part of the ethnically diverse midwest region. In the international memory of the war, the midwest action, which claimed several thousand lives, has been eclipsed by the catastrophic events east of…
The History and Legacy of the Asaba, Nigeria, Massacres
In early October 1967, four months into the Nigerian Civil War, federal troops massacred hundreds in Asaba, a town in southeast Nigeria on the west bank of the Niger. While ethnically Igbo, Asaba was not part of Igbo-dominated Biafra. Through the reconstruction of this event, the article fills a significant gap in the historical record and contributes to the discussion on the impact of traumatic memory at the local and national levels. It also su…

Laboring Across National Borders: Class, Gender, and Militancy in the Proletarian Mass Migrations
A decade-long project on the migration of Italian laborers around the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries points to the methodological challenges, theoretical debates, and some of the rewards of transnational analysis of class, ethnicity, and gender in the making of modern national states. Analyses of internationally mobile laborers historicize current transnational studies, problematize the historiography of national groups, and …

Diaspora or International Proletariat? Italian Labor, Labor Migration, and the Making of Multiethnic States, 1815-1939
We offer a transnational and comparative analysis of the "nationalization" of foreign-born workers in western nation states of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An analysis of this complex historical moment is an important foundation for assessing present-day fears of the imminent collapse of nation states. Canadians and Italians wrestling with demands for regional autonomy; German and French voters opting for a "fortress Europe" united aga…
