Jacques Mehler's early psycholinguistic days in Paris
This article first describes Jacques Mehler's initial efforts to make psycholinguistics and, more generally, the cognitive sciences better known during his first years in Paris. Two lines of research on sentence perception, that we conducted in collaboration with Jacques, are then presented to illustrate his focus. In the Seventies, sentence perception was a central topic in psycholinguistics, with contrasting proposals of syntactic autonomy and …
Assigning Grammatical Gender During Word Production
A voice for the voiceless: Production and perception of assimilated stops in French
Sublexical and Lexical Influences on Gender Assignment in French
The time-course of inflexional morphological priming
In Spanish. the contrast between the suffixes -a and -o in pairs of words such as loc-a/loc-o 'mad woman'/'madman' has a morphological value because it allows the gender selection of the stem loc. However, in pairs such as rat-a/rat-o 'rat'/'moment' this contrast has a lexical value, permitting the selection of two different words. The use of these two classes of word relationship, together with semantically related pairs such as sañaodio 'anger'…

L'Année Psychologique: History of the founding of a 100-year-old French journal
The authors present the history of the founding of the French journal L'Annee Psychologique. The names of Theodule Ribot (1839-1916), Henry Beaunis (1830-1921), and Alfred Binet (1857-1911) are closely associated with the journal. Ribot's election to the chair of Experimental and Comparative Psychology at the College de France in 1888 marked the official emancipation of psychology in France. Because there was no laboratory associated with the cha…

The word frequency effect for open- and closed-class items
A previous attempt (Segui, Mehler, Frauenfelder,&Morton, 1982) to assess in French the putative computational asymmetry between open- and closed-class words failed to reveal a difference in frequency sensitivity for these two types of words. In the present paper, two further lexical decision experiments are presented. The experimental conditions were chosen to maximise the chances of finding differences in frequency sensitivity between the two wo…

The syllable's role in speech segmentation
The Role of the Syllable in Language Acquisition and Perception
Phoneme monitoring, syllable monitoring and lexical access
In this experiment we investigated the role of the lexical status (word/non-word) of the target item in the determination of phoneme and syllable detection times. Subjects monitored either the initial stop consonants (/b/, /d/, /p/) or the initial CV syllables (/ba/, /de/, /pi/) in bisyllabic target items (word/non-word) in mixed lists. The lexical status of the target item did not introduce significant differences for phoneme or syllable detecti…
Developmental production of utterances from a series of lexemes
51 children from 4; 11 to 8; 2 were given three words (a triplet made up of two nouns and one verb) and asked to produce an utterance with them. Words in the triplet were presented in every possible order. At all ages, the dominant responses to non-reversible triplets were utterances in which the animate noun served as the subject of the verb and the inanimate noun as its object, whatever the order of words within the triplet. Production of utter…
