  • Mental biology in second-language acquisition

    Open Access•Sascha W Felix•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1996

Dementsprechend z…

  • Universal Grammar in Language Acquisition

    Open Access•Sascha W Felix•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•1988

Progress in linguistic theory during the past 20 years has made it increasingly clear that language acquisition must be viewed as an essentially deductive process in which the child analyzes the input data s/he is exposed to on the basis of an innately specified set of restrictive principles — technically known as Universal Grammar — which narrowly constrain the kinds of hypotheses a child will consider vis-à-vis a given set of data (cf. Chomsky …

  • Natural Processes in Classroom Second-Language Learning

    Sascha W Felix, A Hahn•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•1985

Two German high school classes (age: 10–12) learning English as a second language were continuously observed for a period of eleven months. This paper describes how the students acquired knowledge of the English pronominal system. Three major results were obtained: (a) the students internalized the various pronominal structures in a highly systematic way which does not reflect teaching methods or material; (b) the students acquired pronouns on th…

  • The Effect of Formal Instruction on Second Language Acquisition1

    Open Access•Sascha W Felix•ARTICLE•Language Learning•1981•Cited by: 10•References: 12

Thirty-four German high school students learning English as a second language under classroom conditions were observed for a period of eight months. It was found that the students' utterances showed many structural features which are also known to characterize LI and naturalistic L2 acquisition. It thus appears that formal instruction cannot eliminate or suppress those processes which constitute man's natural ability to acquire language(s). In co…
