Parameter Hierarchies and Language Contact: The Present Perfect in Ecuadorian Spanish 1
This article explores the hypothesis that the ‘fine‐grained’ grammatical differences that adult grammars under contact are said to be sensitive to (e.g., Hicks et al. 2023) amount to micro/nanoparametric distinctions, in the sense of Roberts (2019). To test this proposal, the study examines two properties of the present perfect in Ecuadorian Spanish as spoken in the United Kingdom: (i) the expression of evidential/mirative values and (ii) a speci…
Modelling Language Contact in Magna Graecia: Parameter Hierarchies, the Catapult Effect and Layering
This article explores a number of case studies taken from an exhaustive examination of Greek–Romance contact in southern Italy. Among other things, it highlights the relevance of the Greek–Romance evidence for refining our understanding of the nature of contact‐induced change and how, when modelled in terms of parameter hierarchies, exogenous change can be formally distinguished from endogenous change. In particular, it is proposed that a formal …
I haven't seen any results yet: On Ethical Collaborative Research in Linguistics and the Need for a Standard Protocol
What does 'good' ethical conduct in linguistics look like from the perspective of the communities with whom we work? We address this question by drawing on observations from a community-bridging and knowledge exchange exercise involving both researchers and members of researched communities. Based on the experiences of those co-authors on the research team working with and for two associations representing Latin Americans and Chagossians in the U…
Negation and Verb-Movement in Romance: New Perspectives on Jespersen’s Cycle
In this article we bring to light one additional factor underlying so-called Jespersen’s Cycle (JC) in Romance which has to date gone unnoticed, namely the varying position of the finite verb within the IP. More specifically, we show that there exists an empirical correlation between the availability of clause-medial/high verb-movement and Stages II–III of JC in which a postverbal negator is licensed. Drawing on novel data, we demonstrate that th…
The Negative Imperative in Southern Calabria. Spirito Greco, Materia Romanza Again
The aim of this article is to investigate a special case of suppletion in the paradigm of the negative imperative in some dialects of southern Calabria. First, we show how these paradigms involve the extension of an original infinitival desinence to a present indicative verb, giving rise to a hybrid imperatival form (Section 2). Second, we claim that this pattern of suppletion does not represent a Romance-internal development but, rather, the out…
Changing alignments in the Greek of southern Italy
This article investigates a peculiar pattern of subject case-marking in the Greek of southern Italy. Recent fieldwork with native speakers, coupled with the consultation of some written sources, reveals that, alongside prototypical nominative subjects, Italo-Greek also licenses accusative subjects, despite displaying a predominantly nominative-accusative alignment. Far from being random replacements within a highly attrited grammar, the distribut…
