  • The influence of social factors on the prosody of Spanish in contact with Basque

    Open Access•Gorka Elordieta, Magdalena Romera•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Aims and objectives/purpose/research questions: The main goal of this paper is to analyse how social factors determine the degree of occurrence of intonational features of Basque in Spanish in the Basque Country (i.e. Basque Spanish). Design/methodology/approach: We concentrate on information-seeking yes/no questions. In Castilian Spanish, these end in a rising contour, whereas in Basque they end in a rising–falling contour. The data were gathere…

  • Estereotipos para la mujer de hoy. La maternidad sexy en el discurso de las revistas españolas para mujeres

    Open Access•Magdalena Romera•ARTICLE•Discurso & sociedad•2020

Este trabajo analiza la presencia del estereotipo “madre-sexy” (MILF “Mother I’d like to fuck”, Cf.

  • Information-Seeking Question Intonation in Basque Spanish and Its Correlation with Degree of Contact and Language Attitudes

    Open Access•Magdalena Romera, Gorka Elordieta•ARTICLE•Languages•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 16

The present study analyzes the prosodic characteristics of the variety of Spanish in contact with Basque (in the Basque Country, Spain). We focus on information-seeking yes/no questions, which present different intonation contours in Spanish and Basque. In Castilian Spanish, these sentences end in a rising contour, whereas in Basque, they end in a falling or rising-falling circumflex contour. In our previous work, this topic was investigated amon…

  • Relationships as regulators of discourse interaction in Spanish

    Open Access•Magdalena Romera•ARTICLE•Círculo de lingüística aplicada a…•2019

In this paper we argue that in analyses of discourse interaction the relationship between participants must be considered as a parameter that conditions their linguistic behavior. A relationship is the result of the experiences shared by partners which create a “cultural code” between them. Each relationship brings a set of circumstances into play that regulates how members behave and how they interpret each other’s words and actions. Our proposa…

  • The transmission of gender stereotypes in the discourse of public educational spaces

    Open Access•Magdalena Romera•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 5

This article investigates the extent to which classical gender stereotypes are transmitted in the public space of higher education institutions and how this contributes to maintaining a social vision in which an unequal distribution of gender persists. This study analyzes, from a multimodal perspective, posters hung on walls in secondary schools and a university in a Spanish city over a period of several months. Results show that although the lin…

  • Prosodic accommodation in language contact

Magdalena Romera, Gorka Elordieta•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•2013•Cited by: 2

In this article we study a language contact situation in Majorca, Spain, in which adult monolingual speakers of Spanish who arrived recently in Majorca acquire aspects of Majorcan Catalan prosody. Although the possibility that the adoption of features can take place directly from Catalan is not rejected, we provide evidence that it can be an indirect process, through a process of accommodation (Trudgill 1986; Giles and Coupland 1991) to the L2 va…

  • Temporal, aspectual, and semantic constraints on Spanish entonces

    Open Access•Magdalena Romera•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2009•References: 6

This article presents an in-depth analysis of entonces as a temporal adverb in Spanish. The deictic and/or anaphoric nature of this expression is discussed, and it is shown that entonces always acts as an anaphoric element that relates events in a temporal way. In its semantic specification entonces includes particular instructions on the temporal relation it may establish between events. It only obtains a temporal reading when the event it accom…
