Navigating the new EU deforestation regulation in the coffee industry
The coffee industry faces a critical juncture with the recent introduction of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This policy demands stringent traceability and reporting on deforestation risks associated with seven key globally traded commodities based on remote sensing. With a focus on coffee, this paper synthesizes insights from survey results, interviews, and engagement with operators placing coffee on the EU market, and an ex…
Unraveling the complexity of land use change and path dependency in agri-environmental schemes for small farmers
This study investigates how Maya farmers in Mexico respond to agri-environmental subsidies aimed at promoting sustainable land use decisions. We do so through a serious games approach, using a tailor-designed board game to identify the land use behaviors of Maya farmers. The game simulated three different subsidy programs promoting mechanized agriculture, forest conservation, and agroforestry. We find that farmers tend to clear forested areas in …

Hotspots of land use change in Europe
Assessing changes in the extent and management intensity of land use is crucial to understanding\nland-system dynamics and their environmental and social outcomes. Yet, changes in the spatial\npatterns of land management intensity, and thus how they might relate to changes in the extent of land\nuses, remains unclear for many world regions.Wecompiled and analyzed high-resolution, spatiallyexplicit\nland-use change indicators capturing changes in …
Carbon stock of oil palm plantations and tropical forests in M alaysia
In M alaysia, the main land change process is the establishment of oil palm plantations on logged‐over forests and areas used for shifting cultivation, which is the traditional farming system. While standing carbon stocks of old‐growth forest have been the focus of many studies, this is less the case for M alaysian fallow systems and oil palm plantations. Here, we collate and analyse M alaysian datasets on total carbon stocks for both above‐ and …
Mapping dynamics of deforestation and forest degradation in tropical forests using radar satellite data
Mapping anthropogenic forest disturbances has largely been focused on distinct delineations of events of deforestation using optical satellite images. In the tropics, frequent cloud cover and the challenge of quantifying forest degradation remain problematic. In this study, we detect processes of deforestation, forest degradation and successional dynamics, using long-wavelength radar (L-band from ALOS PALSAR) backscatter. We present a detection a…

Exploring long-term trends in land use change and aboveground human appropriation of net primary production in nine European countries
Decrease in Danish semi-natural grassland – a social construct or a real-world change
During the past century, the western hemisphere has seen a general trend of agricultural expansion on the behalf of semi-natural habitat types, such as heathlands and meadows. This has been documented in numerous studies of land use change. This trend is reflected in today’s European rural landscapes, which are dominated by intensive agriculture. However, many of these studies are based on cartographical sources, such as topographical and themati…
Challenges and opportunities in mapping land use intensity globally
Future increases in land-based production will need to focus more on sustainably intensifying existing production systems. Unfortunately, our understanding of the global patterns of land use intensity is weak, partly because land use intensity is a complex, multidimensional term, and partly because we lack appropriate datasets to assess land use intensity across broad geographic extents. Here, we review the state of the art regarding approaches f…
A conceptual framework for analysing and measuring land-use intensity
Large knowledge gaps currently exist that limit our ability to understand and characterise dynamics and patterns of land-use intensity: in particular, a comprehensive conceptual framework and a system of measurement are lacking. This situation hampers the development of a sound understanding of the mechanisms, determinants, and constraints underlying changes in land-use intensity. On the basis of a review of approaches for studying land-use inten…
