  • Exile and Linguistic Encounter

    Open Access•Emilie K M Murphy•ARTICLE•Renaissance Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The history of religious migration and experience of exile in the early modern period has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Neglected within this scholarship, however, is sustained discussion of linguistic encounter within these often fraught transcultural and transnational interactions. This article breaks new ground by exploring the linguistic experiences of religious exiles in English convents founded in the Low Countries. Mo…

  • Language and Power in an English Convent in Exile, C. 1621 – C. 1631

    Open Access•Emilie K M Murphy•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•2019

Scholarship on transnational encounter has predominantly focused on men's cross-cultural interactions. This article breaks new ground by exploring women's roles in similar forms of linguistic and power negotiation within the context of English convents founded in Europe during the seventeenth century. Moreover, recent scholarship on English convents has so far remained silent on the question of how these women negotiated the language barriers tha…

    Open Access•Emilie K M Murphy•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2016

In this monograph, Lucy Underwood makes a significant contribution towards answering the pertinent question of what it meant to be catholic, and to live as a member of the most ‘controversial minority’ in post-Reformation England. Specifically, Underwood is interested in ‘the experiences and self-representations of children and young people who came to identify themselves with Catholicism’ (p. 1), and she fills a notable gap in the burgeoning fie…

  • Musical self‐fashioning and the ‘theatre of death’ in late Elizabethan and Jacobean England

    Open Access•Emilie K M Murphy•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2016

The spectacle of the scaffold and theatre of punishment has received a great deal of attention and revision in recent scholarship. This article adds to the existing body of work on the actions of the condemned and argues that sites of execution were performative spaces, which were adapted and appropriated by English Catholics. This article reveals how martyrs subverted the authority of the state through musical performance and transformed persecu…

On the Feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 3 May 1606, Henry Garnet was hung, drawn and quartered in St Paul’s churchyard, London. This sign shall appear in heaven, when the Lord shall come to judgment’. Finally, beseeching God to let …
