  • Scoping Review of the Definitions Used to Describe and Understand Harmful Sexual Behaviors in Children and Young People

    Open Access•Gabrielle R Hunt, Daryl Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2024

There is a growing body of evidence that adolescents, and other children, are responsible for a significant proportion of sexual abuse against children. However, there are substantial differences in how this phenomenon is defined and conceptualized between and within sectors. This scoping review explored the current definitions of harmful sexual behaviors (HSB), and other similar terms, used across a range of stakeholder groups. In all, 141 paper…

  • Machiavellianism and Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration

    Open Access•Lisa K White, Natasha Valos et al.•ARTICLE•Trauma Violence & Abuse•2024

This systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the size of the relationship between Machiavellianism and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. Further, we explored whether the strength of this relationship varied depending on IPV type (i.e., physical, psychological, sexual, and cyber), and perpetrator gender. Systematic searches of Medline Complete, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were conducted on July 4, 2023. Studies…

  • To which world regions does the valence-dominance model of social perception apply

    Open Access•Bartlett C Jones, Lisa Debruine et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 48

Over the past 10 years, Oosterhof and Todorov’s valence–dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgements of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof an…

  • Children show adult-like facial appearance biases when trusting others

    Lynette Ewing, Clare A M Sutherland et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 1

A large research literature details the powerful behavioral consequences that a trustworthy appearance can have on adult behavior. Surprisingly, few studies have investigated how these biases operate among children, despite the theoretical importance of understanding when these biases emerge in development. Here, we used an economic trust game to systematically investigate trust behavior in young children (5-8 years), older children (9-12 years),…

  • Judging approachability on the face of it

Margaret L Willis, Megan L Willis et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2011

The aim of the current study was to examine how emotional expressions displayed by the face and body influence the decision to approach or avoid another individual. In Experiment 1, we examined approachability judgments provided to faces and bodies presented in isolation that were displaying angry, happy, and neutral expressions. Results revealed that angry expressions were associated with the most negative approachability ratings, for both faces…
