Academic impacts of a mindfulness-based intervention on early grades students attending high-needs schools
Beyond overwhelmed: A new measure of the functional impact of toxic stress on parents of young children
Infant–toddler teachers can successfully employ authentic assessment: The Learning Through Relating system
Maternal Sensitivity and the Learning‐Promoting Effects of Depressed and Nondepressed Mothers' Infant‐Directed Speech
The hypothesis that aspects of current mother‐infant interactions predict an infant's response to maternal infant‐directed speech (IDS) was tested. Relative to infants of nondepressed mothers, those of depressed mothers acquired weaker voice‐face associations in response to their own mothers' IDS in a conditioned‐attention paradigm, although this was partially attributable to demographic differences between the 2 groups. The extent of fundamental…
Relational and Individual Resources as Predictors of Empathy in Early Childhood
The goal of this study was to examine children's cognitive and language development and social engagement of mother as mediators of the relationship between maternal emotional availability at 15 months and children's empathy at the ages of two and four. Participants were 661 low‐income, ethnically diverse mother‐child dyads participating in a trial of home visitation in the Denver area. Using home‐ and lab‐based free‐play episodes, mothers' emoti…
Presence and Quality of Touch Influence Coregulation in Mother–Infant Dyads
The first major goal of this study was to determine whether touch would enhance mother—infant coregulation in ordinary, nonstressful face‐to‐face interactions. In an experimental manipulation of presence versus absence of touch in face‐to‐face interactions between 79 mothers and their 3.5‐month‐old infants, results indicated that when touch is prohibited, relaxed and mutually attuned coregulation (asymmetrical coregulation) decreases. Contrary to…
Maternal Preconceptions About Parenting Predict Child Temperament, Maternal Sensitivity, and Children's Empathy
This study examined the influence of maternal preconceptions on child difficult temperament at 6 months and maternal sensitivity at 12-15 months and whether all 3 variables predicted children's empathy at 21-24 months. Within a low-income, ethnically diverse sample of 175 mother-child dyads, path models were tested with 3 empathy indices (prosocial, indifference, inquisitive) as outcomes. Results indicated that maternal preconceptions significant…
