The beat in speech
Converging evidence suggests that musical training can elicit positive transfer effects across multiple domains of language processing, including grammar. In humans, exposure to musical rhythm induces beat and meter perception, which has been shown to enhance attentional allocation and temporal prediction. Theories hypothesize that the predictive gains intrinsic to music rhythmicity may exert cascading effects on syntactic processing by modulatin…
The influence of cognate verbs on adults’ acquisition of cross-linguistically similar and dissimilar L2 structures
Cognates’ cross-linguistic formal similarity causes them to be more activated than non-cognates. Based on the Modular Online Growth and Use of Language framework (Sharwood Smith & Truscott, 2014, The Multilingual Mind: A Modular Processing Perspective , Cambridge University Press), the stronger activation of cognates compared to non-cognates should spread to any L2 structures containing them, leading to greater syntax learning. This should occur …
Violation of non‐adjacent rule dependencies elicits greater attention to a talker's mouth in 15‐month‐old infants
Infants start tracking auditory‐only non‐adjacent dependencies (NAD) between 15 and 18 months of age. Given that audiovisual speech, normally available in a talker's mouth, is perceptually more salient than auditory speech and that it facilitates speech processing and language acquisition, we investigated whether 15‐month‐old infants' NAD learning is modulated by attention to a talker's mouth. Infants performed an audiovisual NAD learning task wh…
Contributions to the Functional Neuroanatomy of Morphosyntactic Processing in L2
Studies about bilingualism and second language acquisition (SLA) have a long tradition within linguistic and psycholinguistic research. With the global population becoming more and more multilingual and the recent proliferation of research in cognitive neuroscience, an increasing number of studies examining the way our brain is able to learn, represent, and handle more than one language at the same time are currently available. However, few attem…
Cognitive and Neural Mechanisms Sustaining Rule Learning From Speech
Learners of a new language have to extract words and the rules from speech. Learners are endowed with the capacity to extract statistical regularities from their environment allowing them to extract words from continuous speech in the absence of other cues. However, it has been proposed that natural languages have an intrinsic cue: prosodic information. This cue seems to trigger the application of different computational resources that allows the…
Executive Control in Bilingual Language Processing
Little is known in cognitive neuroscience about the brain mechanisms and brain representations involved in bilingual language processing. On the basis of previous studies on switching and bilingualism, it has been proposed that executive functions are engaged in the control and regulation of the languages in use. Here, we review the existing evidence regarding the implication of executive functions in bilingual processing using event-related brai…
