  • A U-Turn to the Future

Martin Emanuel, Frank Schipper et al.•BOOK•Sustainable Urban Mobility Since…•2020

From local bike-sharing initiatives to overhauls of transport infrastructure, mobility is one of the most important areas in which modern cities are trying to realize a more sustainable future. Yet even as politicians and planners look ahead, there remain critical insights to be gleaned from the history of urban mobility and the unsustainable practices that still impact our everyday lives. United by their pursuit of a “usable past,” the studies i…

  • Sustainable Urban Mobility in the Present, Past, and Future

Frank Schipper, Myron Emanuel et al.•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2020•Cited by: 1

Making urban mobility more sustainable is a grand challenge, yet urban environments are beacons of hope in delivering this result: authorities are active partners in the mobility transition, and dense cities provide favorable boundary conditions for delivering more sustainable outcomes. A U-turn to the past may present the right recipe for such a mobility transition to take place by making the past "usable." First, this entails understanding how …

Since new business models may deviate from the current regime, they require protective spaces, called niches, for their development. The regime both enables and restricts opportunities for designing business models, thereby defining a ‘business model design space’ that can be dealt with in different ways for niche upscaling. We conducted a qualitative, comparative case study into two types of car sharing business models in Sydney. We focused on n…

  • Infrastructural Europeanism, or the project of building Europe on infrastructures

Frank Schipper, Johan Schot•ARTICLE•History and Technology•2011

This introduction provides a conceptual exploration of infrastructural Europeanism from an institutional point of view. It sketches a brief overview of the term ‘infrastructure’ and discusses the historiography on the important role infrastructures have played in globalization and the formation of the modern nation-state. In addition, the idea of infrastructural Europeanism draws on the governance turn in European integration studies, which has s…

  • Experts and European transport integration, 1945–1958

Johan Schot, Frank Schipper•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2011•Cited by: 10•References: 24

This article explores the role of experts in shaping European transport policies and the transport clauses in the Treaty of Rome in the formative post-war years of European integration. It argues that transport experts had a specific understanding of how to work together on the international level that clashed with the idea of creating a High Authority of independent experts without intimate knowledge of transport. Moreover, their ideas had been …

  • Driving Europe

Open Access•Frank Schipper, Dave Lyddon et al.•BOOK•Driving Europe•2009

Today we can hardly imagine life in Europe without roads and the automobiles that move people and goods around. In fact, the vast majority of movement in Europe takes place on the road. Travelers use the car to explore parts of the continent on their holidays, and goods travel large distances to reach consumers. Indeed, the twentieth century has deservedly been characteried as the century of the car. The situation looked very different around 190…

  • Europe's System Builders

Open Access•Erik Van Der Vleuten, Irene Anastasiadou et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2007•Cited by: 13•References: 6

This article explores what kind of ‘Europe’ was produced in the processes of transnational infrastructure building. It focuses on international organisations dedicated to Europe's infrastructural integration as a promising research site, where infrastructural collaborations (or the lack thereof) were articulated and negotiated. Case studies of the Bureau International des Autoroutes (1931), the Union for the Coordination of Production and Transpo…

  • Changing the Face of Europe

    Open Access•Frank Schipper•ARTICLE•The Journal of Transport History•2007•Cited by: 2

This article scrutinizes the role American diplomats played in using the Marshall Plan to introduce American influence into European transportation matters. While the Marshall Plan primarily involved economic redevelopment of Europe following the second World War the author also notes the use of 'soft power' to influence European powers to want the same things that American officials wanted — easier road access. The result is redevelopment of Eur…

  • Second Plenary Conference of the Tensions of Europe Network

    Frank Schipper•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•2006

The package unexpectedly arrived on a sunny day in July. Judging from its size and shape, I wondered whether it was a CD I had ordered and forgotten about. Then I saw "South Karelian Institute" on the address label, and with a big smile on my face I opened the package. In it was a CD-ROM with a short film that brought back pleasant memories of Lappeenranta. This\ntranquil, provincial town on beautiful Lake Saimaa in Finland served as the venue of…
