    L Blommaert, M Coenders et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2014

his study examines discrimination of Arabic-named applicants in online recruitment procedures in the Netherlands. We develop and implement a new field experiment approach, posting fictitious rsums (n = 636) on two online rsum databases. The experiment covers both male and female app…

  • Determinants of Second Language Proficiency among Refugees in the Netherlands

    F Van Tubergen, Anne Maaike Mulders•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2010

Little is known about the language acquisition of refugees in Western countries. This study examines how pre- and post-migration characteristics of refugees are related to their second language proficiency. Data are from a survey of 3,500 refugees, who were born in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, former Yugoslavia and Somalia, and who resided in the Netherlands. The analysis shows that speaking and reading skills are better among refugees who received m…

  • The Impact of Origin and Host Country Schooling on the Economic Performance of Immigrants

Agnieszka Kanas, F Van Tubergen et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2009•Cited by: 66

This study examines the economic returns to schooling acquired in the country of origin and the country of destination. It uses large-scale survey data on Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese and Antillean immigrants in the Netherlands, which contain direct measures of pre- and post-migration schooling. It is studied whether the returns to origin-country schooling depend on contextual factors: i.e., immigrant group and the region of living. Furthermore,…

  • Dynamics of Interethnic Contact: A Panel Study of Immigrants in the Netherlands

    Borja Martinovic, F Van Tubergen et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2009•Cited by: 95•References: 26

In contrast to previous research on interethnic contact, which is static in nature, this article provides a dynamic analysis. The aim is to explain individuals’ changes in interethnic contact over time by considering relevant time-constant and time-varying characteristics. We investigate the effects of these characteristics measured at time one (t1) on the change in interethnic contact between t1 and time two (t2), thereby providing better estima…

F Van Tubergen, Anne Maaike Mulders et al.•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2008•Cited by: 26•References: 20

This article examines the determinants of immigrants’ language proficiency and language use, two dimensions of language which have so far remained rather separate in the literature. The underlying question is whether similar or different patterns underlie these two aspects of language. The data are from large-scale, repeated cross-sectional surveys specifically designed to study Turkish and Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands. We focus on Dutc…

  • Self-Employment of Immigrants: A Cross-National Study of 17 Western Societies

    F Van Tubergen, Anne Maaike Mulders•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2005•Cited by: 24

This study examines the role of immigrants' country of origin, country of destination and combinations thereof (settings or communities) in the likelihood of immigrants being self- employed. I pooled census data from three classic immigrant countries (Australia, Canada and the United States) and labor-force surveys from 14 countries in the European Union for a cross-national data set. Using multilevel techniques, I find that (1) immigrants from n…
