    Early texts and temple sculpture attest the wide variety of drums in use from the earliest times and their various functions. For example, the dundhubi--a war drum--was taken out before battles, rubbed with oils and unguents, and then played accompany hymns which appealed the drums themselves to defeat the enemy with their great rumble.
