Chhau is a dance form performed annually during the April festival of Chaitra Parva in an area comprising the border regions of the Indian states of northern Orissa, southwest Bengal, and southeast Bihar. The landscape in this area is barren and hilly, with dense scrub forests, still full of small game (deer, wild boar, peasant, and peacocks), surrounding pockets of arid farmland. Although the rulers, landlords, and other upper classes are caste Hindus, about sixty percent of the population is tribal in origin: Santal, Munda, Kurmi, and others. These tribal peoples, with their rich traditions of music, dance, and ritual, have acquired an overlay of Hindu dress, custom and belief. This has brought about a combination of the earlier seasonal fertility, harvest, and animistic worship with Hindu gods and mythology
