  • Nutritional Assessment of Boys of the Spitian Tribe of the Himalayas

    Open Access•P Singh, S P Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2007

The present study has been conducted on boys belonging to Spitian tribe of the high altitudes of the Himalayas in order to evaluate their nutrient intakes. The 24 – hour recall data on nutrient intake was collected on 149 subjects during 1996-1998 from various areas of Spiti valley. The altitudes of different areas from where the data was collected range between 3500-4200 metres above mean-sea-level. The amounts of nutrients present in each food …

  • Proportional Growth Assessment of Spitian Boys of the Himalayas

    Open Access•P Singh, S P Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2007•References: 1

The present cross sectional study on changes in body proportions of different parts during growing years has been conducted on Spitian boys, ranging in age from 5 to 20 years. Anthropometric data for height, weight, biacromial and bicristal diameters and skinfolds at triceps and subscapular was collected on 636 subjects during 1996-1998 from various areas of Spiti valley. The altitudes of different areas from where the data was collected range be…

  • Skeletal Frame Size of Spitian Children

    Open Access•P Singh, S P Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2007

The present study aims at elucidating the age changes in the frame size from skeletal diameters of boys inhabiting Spiti valley (Himachal Pradesh) of the North Western Himalayas, India. The present cross sectional study has been conducted on Spitian boys, ranging in age from 5 to 20 years. Skeletal measurements of humerus bicondylar diameter, femur bicondylar diameter, biacromial diameter and bicristal diameter were taken on 636 subjects during 1…

  • Secular shift in menarcheal age of Patiala (India) schoolgirls between 1974 and 1986

    Open Access•S P Singh, P Malhotra•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1988

The secular shift between 1974 and 1986 in the menarcheal age of Patiala schoolgirls has been explored. A total of 946 girls of higher and lower social classes (type of school being the criterion) were surveyed, out of which 421 were menstruating at the time of investigations. The median ages at menarche (by probits) of higher social class girls were 12.90 +/- 0.64 years in 1974 and 12.54 +/- 0.13 years in 1986, and of lower social class girls 14…

  • Body measurements and somatotypes of young adult Jat-Sikh men of Punjab, India

    P Singh, S P Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1988•Cited by: 2

During 1972 body measurements including height, weight, limb circumferences, skeletal diameters and skinfolds were taken on 100 unrelated and healthy Jat-Sikh men of 17 to 25 years of age, belonging to different areas of Punjab, India. The average height and weight of Jat-Sikhs is 170.4 cm and 54.5 kg, respectively. The mean Heath-Carter somatotype is 3.22-3.40-4.11. The majority of somatotypes is concentrated in endo-ectomorph and meso-ectomorph…

  • Body morphology of high altitude Spitians of North West Himalayas

S P Singh, Sukhraj Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1986

Body morphology of Spitians inhabiting high altitudes (3500 to 4000 m above mean sea level) has been studied with a view to understanding the possible adaptations these people have under gone in response to high altitude factors. Data in respect of various anthropometric measurements including height, weight, girths, body diameters and skinfolds, were collected on 54 males and 32 females ranging in age from 20 to 50 years during June 1980 from Sp…

  • Traditional Perceptabilities of Environment and Desertification

    P Malhotra, S P Malhotra•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1977•Cited by: 1

Luni Panchayat Samiti (a Community Development Block in the district of Jodhpur) is located in the arid zone of Rajasthan and is spread over an area of about two thousand sq kms. The population growth of this tract has been undergoing a linear escalation over the years, registering a threefold increase during the period 1921-1971. The density of population per sq km has consequently grown from 15 in 1921 to 48 in 1971, which is quite high conside…
