  • A Lifeline or Sinking Ship in Ocean Conservation? A Deep Dive into Value Creation of “Blue Bonds”

Felicia Liu, Morag Torrance et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2026

The 2018 issuance of Seychelles’ Debt for Nature blue bond raised new hopes for capital market solutions for conservation. Although there is growing excitement over the potential of blue bonds in channeling much needed investment for ocean conservation, as yet, blue bond uptake remains limited, and existing issuances have been criticized for their vague and unambitious environmental impact. This article analyzes the emergence of blue bonds as a n…

  • Semantic contrast ahead

Open Access•Jens Roeser, Morag Torrance et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2025•References: 69

Whether or not pre-planning extends beyond the initial noun in a noun phrase depends, in part, on the phrase’s dependency structure. Dependency structure disambiguates, in many contexts, the noun phrase’s reference. In the present experiment ( N = 64), we demonstrate that advance planning is affected by the extent to which a dependency supports semantic disambiguation. Participants produced noun phrases in response to picture arrays. Syntax and l…

  • Writing by hand or digitally in first grade

Open Access•Eivor Finset Spilling, Vibeke Rønneberg et al.•ARTICLE•Computers & Education•2023

In a natural experiment we compared development of writing composition skill in five Norwegian first-grade classes in which children (N = 90) learned to compose text by handwriting on paper and in five classes in which children (N = 91) learned by typing on a digital tablet using software that additionally provided read-back via text-to-speech synthesis. Children completed narrative composition probe tasks at five timepoints over eight months, wr…

  • The process-disruption hypothesis

Open Access•Vibeke Rønneberg, Morag Torrance et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2022

This study investigates the possibility that lack of fluency in spelling and/or typing disrupts writing processes in such a way as to cause damage to the substance (content and structure) of the resulting text. 101 children (mean age 11 years 10 months), writing in a relatively shallow orthography (Norwegian), composed argumentative essays using a simple text editor that provided accurate timing for each keystroke. Production fluency was assessed…

  • Child‐level factors affecting rate of learning to write in first grade

Open Access•Morag Torrance, María Arrimada et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2021•References: 47

BACKGROUND: Written composition requires handwriting, spelling, and text planning skills, all largely learned through school instruction. Students' rate of learning to compose text in their first months at school will depend, in part, on their literacy-related abilities at school start. These effects have not previously been explored. AIM: We aimed to establish the effects of various literacy-related abilities on the learning trajectory of first-…

  • Forging Glocal Governance? Urban Infrastructures as Networked Financial Products

    Open Access•Morag Torrance, Morag I Torrance•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2008•Cited by: 55•References: 23

Urban infrastructure provisions are increasingly shifting from public good to private property, with cities and regions valued merely on a quarter-to-quarter basis. The argument in this article is threefold. The urban infrastructure landscape is undergoing financialization. Additionally, building on Graham and Marvin who describe how infrastructure networks are being unbundled locally, these infrastructures are simultaneously being interlinked in…

  • Snakes and Ladders

Open Access•Sara Willott, Christine Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2001•Cited by: 16•References: 22

This paper explores the ways in which male offenders in professional‐status occupations prior to conviction construct and justify money‐related crime. We report a detailed analysis, based in grounded theory and critical social‐psychological discourse analysis, of a loosely‐structured group interview with four offenders. The men constructed justifications for their offenses in terms of “breadwinning” for their immediate family and economic respons…

Open Access•Morag Torrance, Mark Torrance et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1999•Cited by: 3

Background. Writing is an important skill required in all graduate employment but we lack information on the most effective ways to write, and how to foster writing expertise in students. It is widely held that writers evolve characteristic patterns of working (strategies), and that these strategies are important for writing success and efficiency. Most of the available data on the writing strategies of expert writers, however, consist of questio…
