Bernard Clist, Pierre De Maret•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 39

Off the coast of Cameroon, Bioko Island was populated by the Bubi at an early stage of the Bantu expansion, although surprisingly they did not use iron until the arrival of the Europeans much later. Unfortunately, despite some research having been undertaken, mostly during the Spanish colonial period, the local archaeological sequence remains poorly known. On the basis of some short excavations carried out on Bioko, this paper evaluates the state…

  • Tea Party Toys? Classical Kisalian Grave Goods from the Upemba (D.R. Congo)

Pierre De Maret•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 1

The continuous Iron Age sequence that connects the 10 th century Kisalian in central Africa to the present day inhabitants of the area, the Luba, provides a rare opportunity to link archaeological data to ethnographic observations. Numerous Kisalian graves reflect the elaborate rituals and beliefs and the complex socioeconomic organization of that period. One of its intriguing aspects is the extensive use of various miniature objects as grave goo…

  • Bones, sex, and dolls: Solving a mystery in Central Africa and beyond

    Pierre De Maret•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Ethnographic parallels are used to explain the presence and significance of caprine or antelope metapodial bones principally in children's graves in Iron Age contexts in the Congo. Beyond Africa, in the Neolithic in France and Italy, but also during the Bronze Age in the Levant, the same mysterious bones have often been collected in similar contexts. It is likely that the natural shape of these bones led them to be seen as human figures and to be…

In studying those developments, and how African political systems challenged simplistic neo-evolutionary models as they kept moving back and forth from lineage to kingdom, it may be useful to focus first on understanding how egalitarian societies became c…

Pierre De Maret, Hugues Legros•ARTICLE•Civilisations•1993•References: 1

The tribal lands of the Luba of Mulongo, situated at the extreme north of the Upemba depression are not only an almost obligatory point of passage for those coming from the east en route to the heart of the Luba but are also an important market. It is therefore a very useful place to study the Arab-Swahili penetration in the kingdom of Luba in the nineteenth century, especially as one of the first merchants to reach this chefferie was none other …

The assumption that major changes in pottery closely reflect change in other areas of culture has been widely accepted by prehistorians, but it has seldom been tested against independent historical or ethnographic evidence. It is here suggested, on the basis of dated pottery types and of independently dated historical developments, that there is not necessarily a close connection between the two. The evidence for this conclusion is derived from h…
