  • Planned and Post Hoc Comparisons for Tests of Homogeneity where the Dependent Variable is Categorical and Ordered

    Open Access•Leonard A Marascuilo, Fred Dagenais•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1982

Researchers in the social sciences tend to analyze two dimensional frequency tables by means of Karl Pearson's Chi-square test of homogeneity. This can be improved upon if the dependent variable represents an ordered qualitative characteristic. In particular, one can substitute the Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance on ranks for the more familiar Karl Pearson test. An example is provided of this modification for a planned and post hoc analysis

A Type IV error, as introduced by Marascuilo and Levin (1970), refers to the incorrect interpretation of a correctly rejected hypothesis. It was suggested that Type IV errors may be found in abundance in factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) designs, in particular in the interpretation of significant interactions. The source of such Type IV errors is two-fold: (1) researchers typically employ post hoc statistical procedures with an associated Ty…

Leonard A Marascuilo, Fred Dagenais•ARTICLE•The Journal of Negro Education•1974

Since the Supreme Court decision in 1954 that separate schools for different races are inherently unequal the nation has moved in the direction of increased mixing in the schools. rhetoric used to bring about or prevent such mixing encompasses the concept of racial balance which in turn relies upon the terms desegregation and These words are often used interchangeably. Sometimes the usage betrays a particular social or political stance wherein ei…

  • The Effect of Factor Scores, Guttman Scores, and Simple Sum Scores on the Size of F Ratios in an Analysis O F Variance Design

    Fred Dagenais, Leonard A Marascuilo•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1973

Many questions in the social sciences reduce to a comparison of mean values across groups in a classical analysis of variance F test. Often the original data my come from a set of items in a questionnaire or personality inventory. When this occurs, some sort of data reduction, combining of items, or scaling procedure is first performed before the hypothesis of no difference in mean values across groups can be made. In many cases, this problem cau…
