Moving Toward a More Comprehensive Analysis of Acceleration Profiles in Elite Youth Football
In football, having greater acceleration ability may decide the most important moments within matches. Up to now, commonly used acceleration variables have typically been investigated in isolation, with each variable suffering from unique limitations. Subsequently, any findings may provide a limited representation of what specific acceleration demands had actually occurred. Without gaining a comprehensive understanding of acceleration demands in …
Measuring the resilience of English Premier league clubs to economic recessions
ABSTARCTSince its inception in 1992, the Premier League has faced a number of economic shocks, including a global financial crisis. While there is ample literature on insolvency of football clubs, this does not necessarily help us gauge financial fragility to economic shocks. Clubs’ resilience to shocks is important to our understanding of the Premier League’s ability to grow and outperform other leagues in an increasingly global and competitive …
A picture of regret: An empirical investigation of post-Brexit referendum survey data
Whilst the properties of decision regret have been widely explored in experimental and game theoretic studies, the empirical features of regret from large-scale 'binary decision' national events in practice have garnered less scrutiny. This study is an empirical investigation of novel survey data reporting 'Brexit' voting choices and expressions of a desire to change voting choices post-referendum. We investigate if Leave voters are more or less …
How US newspapers view the UK’s NHS: A study in international lesson-drawing
Healthcare on both sides of the Atlantic is a highly charged political and economic subject. This work considers US media coverage of the UK's National Health Service (NHS), an under-researched area. We assess the framing of the NHS in editorials, opinion and feature articles during the time of the Obama administration to show how media can perform the role of lesson-drawing, a theory adopted from public policy research. The study also applies th…
Searching for a Smart City: A Bibliographic Analysis of ‘Public Facing’ EU Smart City Projects
The narrative used to describe smart cities, including the experimentation on them, affects the perception of the smart city. This study systematically assembles and analyses ‘public facing’ smart city project data from across the EU. Using a bibliographic analysis, including word frequency analyses across time and countries of project descriptions, we identify the dominant themes and constructs in the smart city narratives used by teams advancin…

Suicide, sentiment and crisis
A lack of clarity surrounds the precise nature of the transmission mechanism by which an economic crisis actually affects suicide. This study posits the hypothesis that this influence broadly translates as emotional reaction, ‘gut feelings’ and as such explicitly considers the use of subjective factors of economic performance to better explain variations in suicide rates. Alongside traditional economic indicators we use a ‘consumer sentiment’ mea…
Quantifying the cost of foregone public goods spillovers on an island
This paper develops a framework for quantifying the cost of the lack of public goods spillovers from neighbouring municipalities for a geographically separated municipality. Parameter estimates from a spatial panel regression of local public expenditure in 205 municipalities in England, Scotland and Wales are used to identify the extra budget that a remote municipality would require in order to provide the same level of public goods as without se…
The President and Immigration Law
The President and Immigration Law reveals how the President has become our immigration policy-maker-in-chief. By deciding how to enforce the law, administrations shape the polity, sometimes clashing with Congress. Rather than lament this dynamic as distorting the Constitution, the authors demonstrate how it can advance the law's legitimacy and outline political principles and institutional devices to curb potential abuses
The European dilemma: Evaluating the implications of Uefa Europa League participation on English Premier League clubs
For clubs qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, participation generates a series of tensions. UEFA has provided financial rewards for those clubs, but with qualification comes additional pressures on playing squads which are often less able to deal with the performative demands of an extra competition, as they generally possess fewer financial resources compared with teams gaining Champions League qualification. This paper evaluates these confli…
Does Immigration Enforcement Reduce Crime? Evidence from Secure Communities
Prior research investigates whether immigrants commit more crimes than native-born people. Yet the central policy used to regulate immigration—detention and deportation—has received little empirical evaluation. This article studies a recent policy innovation called Secure Communities. This program permits the federal government to check the immigration status of every person arrested by local police and to take the arrestee into federal custody p…
