  • Change and Permanence in Language Politics in Nepal

    Selma K Sonntag•CHAPTER•Language Policy, Culture, and…•2017

The absolute monarchy was reduced to a constitutional monarchy, and governing was turned over to a democratically elected parliamentary regime. The Nepali-only policy of the absolute monarchy was discarded in favor of an official language policy that recognized Nepal&s;s linguistic diversity. In 2005 the King of Nepal turned back the clock on political democratization that had been ticking, slowly, since 1990. The patterns of political change and…

  • Appropriating Identity or Cultivating Capital? Global English in Offshoring Service Industries

    Open Access•Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Work Review•2005•Cited by: 12•References: 8

In the popular media, much has been made of the adoption of American identities by Indian nationals working in call centers in urban India. In the transactions between call center workers in India and their American customers, language is often the only conveyor of cultural identity. The implications of this linguistic globalization are drawn out by examining the historical trajectory of the politics of global English in India. I argue that the i…

  • Autonomous Councils in India: Contesting the Liberal Nation-State

    Open Access•Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•Alternatives Global Local Political•1999•Cited by: 6•References: 1

remember, as a small child, making an annual summer pilgrimage to Montana with my family to visit grandparents. As our pink station wagon hummed along the two-lane interstate highways, would look out the window at the big-sky wheat-filled country, bored, and demand of my father, Where are we? Glancing out his window, he would impatiently respond with a relational positioning (50 miles from Shelby) or a vague the countryside. No, would insist, I w…

  • Ethnolinguistic identity and language policy in Nepal

    Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•1995•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Nepal has recently been replacing its monolingual, Nepali‐only, assimilationist policy of the past with a new multilingual policy in education and broadcasting based on ethnolinguistic differentiation. This article analyses the impact on two groups: the response of the Tamang is spurring forward the creation of a pan‐Tamang ethnic identity; conversely the response of the Tharus is to create a language to add to the belongings of their imagined co…

  • The politics of compromise: The Enactment of Regional Unilingualism

    Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•International Journal of the…•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

  • The US national defense education act: Failure of supply‐side language legislation

    Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•1990•References: 2

The United States Congress passed the National Defense Education Act in 1958 in an attempt to create a reserve army of scientists and foreign language experts. I argue that the legislation failed to accomplish its goal in regard to the foreign language component of the Act because Congress neglected to create a demand for foreign language experts in addition to the supply. The neglect stemmed from the way the need for foreign language skills was …

  • The school as a bargaining point in language politics: The Belgian language law of 1932

    Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•1989•References: 4

It is commonly held that the French‐speaking population of Flanders, living mostly in the Brussels area, lost out heavily when Dutch was made the sole medium of instruction in their primary and secondary schools in 1932. The French speakers, it is argued, accepted the linguistic defeat out because in non‐linguistic terms it was also a victory for them, as political Liberals, over conservative Catholicism, since private Catholic schools would be t…

  • Language Planning and Policy in Nepal

    Selma K Sonntag•ARTICLE•ITL - International Journal of…•1980

The paper is an historical account of language planning and policy in Nepal, from the period of the first unification of Nepal in the 1700's up until the present day, with comments on possible future trends. Emphasis is placed on the period after 1951, when the Rana regime was first replaced by democratic experimentation and later by monarchal rule. The language policy of this post-1951 period is illustrated in the paper by co-ordinating governme…
