  • The Widowers' Two Plights

    Open Access•Oren Falk•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2025•References: 17

Widowers make occasional appearances in Icelandic sagas of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and-even though Old Norse did not even have a word for them-they exhibit some distinctive behavioral patterns. This article uses the framework of bereavement studies to examine the interplay of gender, affect, and small-scale politics in the wake of the loss of a wife. It proposes two archetypes of dysfunctional bereaved husband, observable in the m…

  • Hólmganga í aptrgǫngu , ‘Zombie Duelling’

    Oren Falk•ARTICLE•Viking and Medieval Scandinavia•2023

It is widely accepted that the hólmganga, a traditional form of Norse duelling, was abolished in the early eleventh century. Or was it? This article examines the evidence for the survival of the form into the thirteenth century (and beyond). It asks what defines a hólmganga, as well as what it means for a social institution to endure across centuries. I identify in the Íslendingasögur practices and idioms that constitute hólmganga conventions, ar…

  • A Dark Age Peter Principle

    Open Access•Oren Falk•ARTICLE•Early Medieval Europe•2010

Many readers, recognizing the incompatibility of heroism with the duties of kingship, have argued that Beowulf tells a story of colossal failure. Drawing on anthropological theory, I propose that the protagonist is more Big‐Man than king and that his heroism, far from a socially dysfunctional flaw, is in fact the leash by which society yanks him back from establishing himself as king. Beowulf thus speaks to an aristocracy disinclined to submit to…

  • The Vanishing Volcanoes

    Oren Falk•ARTICLE•Folklore•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The entire corpus of Icelandic Family Sagas contains no express reference to volcanic fires. This article explores the reasons behind this puzzling absence in a genre whose realism is rightly celebrated. I propose to read a unique, oblique reference in Grettis saga as possible evidence of a submerged vernacular theory. "The Cultural Construction of Violence in Medieval Western Scandinavia." Unpublished Ph.D. diss., University of Toronto, 2002. [G…
