Estimating mutation rates using abnormal human hemoglobins
Estimates of mutation rates in human populations vary widely. Considering the numerous potential sources of error, which include illegitimacy, the existence of genocopies and/or phenocopies, variation in expressivity, and incomplete penetrance, the extent of variation among estimates is not surprising. When mutational events are defined in detail at the level of DNA sequence, one can estimate rates at which nucleotide substitutions give rise to t…

Multiple fetal and adult hemoglobins in Malaysian Macaca nemestrina
The hemoglobins of fetal and adult Macaca nemestrina were investigated electrophoretically and chromatographically. Standard electrophoretic techniques failed to reveal variation in either fetal or adult hemoglobins beyond that previously attributed to the presence of the duplicate γ‐chain loci characteristic of this species. However, column chromatography of whole hemolysates on CM‐Sephadex or of globin chains on CM‐cellulose in 8 M urea reveale…
Amino acid compositions of the tryptic peptides comprising the β‐hemoglobin chain of Macaca nemestrina
The tryptic peptides comprising the aminoethylated β‐hemoglobin chain of Macaca nemestrina were isolated by paper electrophoresis and chromatography. The results of stains for specific amino acids, comparison of peptide maps with those produced by aminoethlated β chains from human hemoglobin A, and amino acid analyses of all peptides in the macaque β chain support the conclusion that the primary structure of the β chain of M. nemestrina is identi…
Fetal hemoglobin in newborn baboons, Papio cynocephalus
Hemoglobins from a newborn baboon, Papio cynocephalus , and from a 15‐day‐old baboon of the same species were examined for electrophoretic properties of polypeptide chains and were tested for alkali resistance. Hemoglobin of newborn P. cynocephalus appears to be analogous to human fetal hemoglobin. Hemoglobin of newborn P. cynocephalus is composed of α‐like and γ‐like chains and hemoglobin of adult P. cynocephalus is composed of α‐like and β‐like…
