  • Hurricane threat in Florida

    Victoria Basolo, Laura J Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Hazards•2017•References: 11

Households in hurricane-prone regions respond to hurricane threat in numerous ways. Perceptions about their risk and other factors are thought to influence individuals’ decisions to take protective actions for hurricanes. This research investigates the perceptions, behavioral intentions, and actual protective actions of a sample of residents in Miami-Dade County, Florida. We use unique data collected via a telephone survey to investigate a set of…

  • Analysis of hazardous material releases due to natural hazards in the United States

Open Access•Hatice Sengul, Nicholas Santella et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Natural hazards were the cause of approximately 16,600 hazardous material (hazmat) releases reported to the National Response Center (NRC) between 1990 and 2008-three per cent of all reported hazmat releases. Rain-induced releases were most numerous (26 per cent of the total), followed by those associated with hurricanes (20 per cent), many of which resulted from major episodes in 2005 and 2008. Winds, storms or other weather-related phenomena we…

  • Kouroi and Statistics

    Jane B Carter, Laura J Steinberg•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2010

In a well-known series of articles, Eleanor Guralnick undertook statistical studies to compare the proportions of Greek archaic kouroi with one another and with the proportions of the Egyptian second canon; she concluded that Greek sculptors used the Egyptian canon sporadically for proportioning kouroi during most of the sixth century B.C.E. Here, we examine the results of Guralnick's analyses against the backdrop of current statistical method. W…

  • The Effects of Confidence in Government and Information on Perceived and Actual Preparedness for Disasters

Open Access•Victoria Basolo, Laura J Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Behavior•2009

This research examines perceived and actual preparedness for two types of natural hazard risks: earthquakes in the Los Angeles County area and hurricanes within the New Orleans metropolitan area. Using data collected from a sample of households in these regions, the influence of individuals' confidence in local government to manage a disaster and exposure to disaster preparedness information sources were tested as explanations for levels of perce…

  • Decision Making for Extreme Events

Open Access•Nicholas Santella, Laura J Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Policy Research•2009•Cited by: 1

Recent tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, and the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake have revealed a need for methods to evaluate and plan for the impact of extreme events on critical infrastructure. In particular, awareness has been raised of the threat that a major disruption will lead to cascading failures that cross boundaries between interdependent infrastructure sectors, greatly magnifying human and economic impacts. To assist in planning for …

  • Reevaluation of Energy Use in Wheat Production in the United States

    Open Access•Gerhard Piringer, Laura J Steinberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2006

Energy budgets for agricultural production can be used as building blocks for life‐cycle assessments that include agricultural products, and can also serve as a first step toward identifying crop production processes that benefit most from increased efficiency. A general trend toward increased energy efficiency in U.S. agriculture has been reported. For wheat cultivation, in particular, this study updates cradle‐to‐gate process analyses produced …

  • Emerging Issues for Natech Disaster Risk Management in Europe

Ana Maria Cruz, Laura J Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2006•Cited by: 6

There is growing concern about the potential effects of natural disaster-triggered technological (natech) disasters. The chlorine releases in the Czech Republic following the floods that swept across Europe in the summer of 2002 and the multiple hazardous materials releases triggered by the Turkey earthquake of August 1999 were examples which showed the potential danger of a natech disaster occurring near populated areas. However, there is scarce…

  • The Tenure Trap

    Open Access•Raymond J Burby, Laura J Steinberg et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2003•Cited by: 18•References: 25

Natural disasters can result in releases of toxic materials that pose a grave threat to populations exposed to them. The authors provide evidence from California and Louisiana to show that in comparison with homeowners, renters are significantly less well prepared to survive a joint naturaland technologicaldisaster without injury. Rentalhousing can be targeted for public awareness and other measures that can improve the preparedness of tenants, b…
