The study of terracotta figurines made in Antiquity is a field of research growing in importance (now called Coroplastic Studies). The TERRAEGYPT project is more specifically interested in the moulded statuettes made from the 4th century BC to 4th century AD in Egypt. Many museums in France and abroad possess them, but only the prestigious collections have been the subject of catalogues (such as those of the Louvre Museum or the British Museum). …

Le visage du pouvoir
The royal portrait in the Hellenistic period is both the image of an individual and the representation of an ideology. I intend to show in this paper, by using literary sources and iconographic documentation, how to build a portrait of the prince at that time. With this aim in mind, two iconographic types, widely adopted to represent the sovereign, the “Nikator” and the “Tryphon”, will be studied. These iconographic types allow us to wonder about…
This study, that bears on the portraits of the sovereigns of the Hellenistic era, brings out the elements of a semantics of the adopted iconographic formulae. The point is to examine the construction of the royal image and more particularly the sovereign’s face. The motivations of the silent partner, the know-how of the artist and the look of the spectator on the royal image are in turn examined. The notions of verisimilitude and idealization will…
