Realism and Idealization in the Representation of Peasants in Virgil’s Georgics
It is commonly said that Virgil, in the Georgics, outlines a realistic picture of the work in fields and rural life, with its hardness and challenges; this is true only to some extent. He provides, in fact, an explication for the origin and necessity of work that is substantially a theodicy, since the end of the Golden Age is traced back to Jupiter’s decision, aimed at pushing men to develop their skills and to discover arts and techniques: work …

Later Greek Epic and the Latin Literary Tradition
The volume offers an innovative and systematic exploration of the diverse ways in which Later Greek Epic interacts with the Latin literary tradition. Taking as a starting point the premise that it is probable for the Greek epic poets of the Late Antiquity to have been familiar with leading works of Latin poetry, either in the original or in translation, the contributions in this book pursue a new form of intertextuality, in which the leading epic…
The ludic dimension, which is an important feature in Ausonius’ poetry, does not imply that his poems are disengaged, superficial and futile, as claimed by many scholars. The ludic aspect of his poetry is rather a pedagogical strategy, an attractive and effective tool that the poet relies on, to transmit cultural and even moral teaching to his pupils, as well as to a larger public
From tamarisks to stars
Vergil’s Eclogues, despite belonging to the bucolic genre and being largely modelled on Theocritus’ Idylls, bear clear marks of cosmic inspiration; these emerge from time to time, now in one poem, next in another, issuing ideas and images apparently inconsistent with the pastoral world: this happens especially in the three central Eclogues. Non-pastoral ideas and images often refer to philosophical or mythological themes, possibly coming either f…

Sinon in Roman Drama
This article investigates the probable sources of the version of the Sinon myth found in Plautus Bacchides 938, where Sinon hides in busto Achilli. The Vatican Epitome of Pseudo-Apollodorus knows this version of the story, but Plautus seems to have followed a different source. He borrowed the motif not from a Greek play or poem, but from Roman tragedy, probably the Equos Troianus of Naevius, who in turn got it from a post-classical Greek drama
