  • Key Issues in Adoption Legislation: A Call for Research

    Kerry J Daly, Kerry Daly et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•1997•References: 9

This paper examines the underlying assumptions associated with two key areas of adoption legislation where there is variation across jurisdictions and calls for change. These legislative issues are consent and openness. In each area, there is very little social research which might otherwise offer insight into how to best formulate legislation in a way that would serve the needs of various members of the adoption experience. The primary goal of t…

  • Canadian Adoption Statistics: 1981-1990

Michael P Sobol, Kerry J Daly et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1994•Cited by: 2

Patterns of adolescent pregnancy resolution have changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Contrary to popular belief, there has been a decrease in the fertility rate among adolescents. In the United States, the fertility rate for adolescents aged from 15 to 19 has dropped from 97.3 per 1000 in 1957 to 51.7 in 1983 (Vinovskis, 1988). This parallels a similar, although less steep trend in Canada where there were 53.4 pregnancies per 1000 in 197…

  • The Adoption Alternative for Pregnant Adolescents: Decision Making, Consequences, and Policy Implications

    Open Access•Michael P Sobol, Kerry J Daly et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 25

It is estimated that approximately 3% of pregnant adolescents who carry to term will place their infant for adoption. Birth mothers who place for adoption have higher socioeconomic indices and are less influenced by a negative social network than are those who keep the child. As a result of placing an infant, birth mothers may experience an enduring sense of loss. This is exacerbated by the social blocking of open grieving and restricted opportun…

  • What Causes Mean: An Analysis of Children's Interpretations of the Causes of Social Experience

    Open Access•Michael P Sobol, Brian M Earn•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1985•References: 13

Fourth, fifth and sixth-grade children, assigned to one of four sociometric groups - popular, controversial, isolated and rejected - rated the dimensional meaning of eight social attributions: other's motives, personality, behavioural sociability, mood, third-party intervention, personality interaction, luck and effort. Analysis of these ratings revealed that, in general, children use the locus and controllability dimensions in a manner which clo…

  • A Re-Examination of the Relationship between Locus of Control and Voluntary Heart Rate Change

Richard D Schneider, Michael P Sobol et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1978•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The present study was an attempt to resolve some of the inconsistencies and discrepancies in previous studies examining the relationship between Rotter's locus of control construct and voluntary heart rate (HR) change. Twelve internals and 12 externals received two sessions (one week apart) of bidirectional HR control trials with or without feedback. Internals, relative to externals, were better able to increase their HR and showed more improved …
