The Quest for Cure of “Alzheimer's”: Reimagining the Goal by Changing Culture
This essay explores personal and cultural meaning in dementia through the respective stories of biomedicine, public health, and alternative worldviews, using Indigenous perspectives as a critical example. Since Alzheimer's visibility as a biomedical illness intensified in the 1970s, the disease has generated powerful narratives of scientific cure that are now limiting public discourse and appropriate social and ecological action. In this essay, o…

Wising up: designing a course for the future is an intergenerational, transdisciplinary course that was offered in the fall 2019. Two of the books explicitly include characters who are experiencing memory cha…
From Intergenerational to Intergenerative: Towards the Futures of Intergenerational Learning and Health
Intergenerational schools and other multi-age contact zones are important innovations in learning and health. In this reflective essay, we explicate the idea of ‘intergenerativity’ as an elaboration of concept of ‘intergenerational’ to include other inter-actions, such as those that form among disciplines, nations, and professions. Based on celebrating diverse ideas and backgrounds, intergenerativity is a future-oriented concept that goes “betwee…
The Challenges of Cognitive Aging: Integrating Approaches from Neuroscience to Intergenerational Relationships
The individual and social challenges created by population aging and especially the growing number of people labeled with dementia demand new innovative and comprehensive approaches. A broader integrative biology needs to replace reductionist, overly simplistic biomedical solutions that dominate today's scientific discourse. For example Alzheimer's is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized more fully at a system rather than molecular level. Coord…
A Model of Intergenerativity: How the Intergenerational School is Bringing the Generations Together to Foster Collective Wisdom and Community Health
Our world is presently facing formidable challenges requiring intergenerational, interdisciplinary, and interprofessional solutions that encourage local learning and action. This article articulates the concept of “intergenerativity,” a theoretical and practical framework that can build the collective wisdom and inspire the informed local action that a world addled with complex challenges so desperately needs. Intergenerativity is defined and con…

The Impact of Action Research and Education Reform in Northern Ireland: Education in Democracy
A recent survey of the impact on graduates of the University of Ulster's MSc programme in education management has identified issues concerning the nature and purpose of education in the current social and political climate of Northern Ireland. The evidence suggests that most of them use some form of action research to accommodate themselves to, and make more efficient, the operations of the organisation in which they work. This means that their …
