What happens behind the ‘transnational’ of transnational films? Examining China and South Korea’s co-productions
The global popularity of the Korean Wave has enhanced the reputation of South Korea’s (hereafter Korea) creative industries, making Korea an ideal collaborator for China as they develop and produce ‘created in China’ content. Focusing on China’s film industry, as of 2021, China sits at the top spot in terms of box office revenues and has been opened to co-producing with other national industries. To promote cultural flows in East Asia, Koreans ar…

Examining the Chinese-Australian post-production relationship through Chinese audiences’ cinema experience
In recent years, China has become one of the largest film industries and in order to remain competitive, Chinese blockbusters are attempting to imitate Hollywood post-production qualities. As Australian post-production companies are internationally renowned for their expertise, Chinese filmmakers are seeking opportunities to collaborate with Australians. The Australian government recognises China’s enthusiasm and has begun highlighting the nation…
Korean–Chinese Film Remakes in a New Age of Cultural Globalisation: Miss Granny (2014) and 20 Once Again (2015) along the Digital Road
Since the early 2000s, the Korean Wave (aka Hallyu) has influenced Greater China in enterprising and complex ways that diverge from the ways in which Hallyu has impacted other markets. At the same time, since China joined the Word Trade Organization in 2001, art, culture and media production have been largely transformed from vehicles for state propaganda into new gateways for producing and showcasing popular commercial entertainment. Korean prod…
Generalising men's affective experiences
Existing approaches to understanding gendered emotions have inadequately identified the complexity of masculine affective experience on a macro-social (population) level. The division of social science into quantitative surveys of singular emotions (e.g. happiness) at the macro-social level, or qualitative examinations of multiplex feelings (i.e. multiple emotional/affective sensations experienced simultaneously) at the micro (local) level leaves…
The seven deadly sins of world university ranking: A Summary From Several Papers
World university rankings use the weight-and-sum approach to process data. Although this seems to pass the common sense test, it has statistical problems. In recent years, seven such problems have been uncovered: spurious precision, weight discrepancies, assumed mutual compensation, indictor redundancy, inter-system discrepancy, negligence of indicator scores and inconsistency between changes in ranking and 'Overall'. These issues render the vali…

Nearing world-class: Singapore's two universities in QSWUR 2015/16
Many universities strive to become world-class and two of Singapore's universities are almost there, being ranked 12th and 13th in the QSWUR 2015/16. This study looked into the details of indicator rankings and found that the two universities are comparable to those in the top 10 universities in the same ranking in practically all indicators with the exception of Citations. Further analysis of the data of the 58 highest ranking universities with …
What theOveralldoesn't tell about world university rankings: Examples from Arwu, QSWUR, and THEWUR in 2013
In the various world university ranking schemes, the Overall is a sum of the weighted indicator scores. As the indicators are of a different nature from each other, Overall conceals important differences. Factor analysis of the data from three prominent ranking schemes reveals that there are two factors in each of the ranking systems. For Academic Rankings of World University, the two factors are both academic in nature with a time element and ar…
Nominal versus attained weights in Universitas 21 Ranking
Universitas 21 Ranking of National Higher Education Systems (U21 Ranking) is one of the three new ranking systems appearing in 2012. In contrast with the other systems, U21 Ranking uses countries as the unit of analysis. It has several features which lend it with greater trustworthiness, but it also shared some methodological issues with the other systems. One of these is the discrepancies between nominal and attained weights. This problem is sol…
Finland and Singapore in Pisa 2009: Similarities and differences in achievements and school management
In PISA 2009, Finland and Singapore were both ranked high among the participating nations and have caught much attention internationally. However, a secondary analysis of the means for Reading achievement show that the differences are rather small and are attributable to spurious precision. Hence, the two nations should be considered as being on par with each other in achievements and be assigned the same rank. Spurious precision as a problem of …
Misleading university rankings: Cause and Cure for Discrepancies Between Nominal and Attained Weights
Recent research into university ranking methodologies uncovered several methodological problems among the systems currently in vogue. One of these is the discrepancy between the nominal and attained weights. The problem is the summation of unstandardized indicators for the total scores used in ranking. It is demonstrated that weight discrepancy can misinform and hence mislead. The problem can be prevented statistically had the indicator scores be…
Rectifying an honest error in world university rankings: A Solution to the Problem of Indicator Weight Discrepancies
Discrepancies between the nominal and attained indicator weights misinform rank consumers as to the relative importance of the indicators. This may lead to unwarranted institutional judgements and misdirected actions, causing resources being wasted unnecessarily. As a follow-up to two earlier studies, data from the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Quacquarelli Symonds World University Ranking (QSWUR) and Times Higher Education World…
Language use: A missing link
Language use as a variable in studies of second language learning is discussed, and measurement of integrative and instrumental motivation as propounded by Gardner and Lambert over the years. Data collected from about 300 secondary school pupils learning Chinese (Mandarin) shows integrative and instrumental motivation to be independent and that language use explains one‐fifth of total variance in language achievement
