  • Noise versus Access

    Open Access•Judith Tomkins, Neville Topham et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 10

The effects of a major airport are unlikely to exhibit a uniform spatial distribution. The benefits to industries and individual households may extend well beyond the local economy, whereas many of the costs are spatially concentrated in the immediate environment. In particular, the problems of noise and traffic generation can be expected to fall principally upon adjacent populations. This paper addresses the general question of whether the costs…

  • Supply Chains, Material Linkage and Regional Development

    Open Access•J Twomey, Judith Tomkins et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 20

The importance of economic linkage to regional development has been implicit in the variety of approaches that have been taken to analysing the development process. Despite this, no mechanism exists which allows a general assessment of regional supply networks. The paper provides one approach to this type of evaluation in UK regions. Focusing on the North West of England and taking UK input-output tables as the basis of analysis, sectoral linkage…

  • Allocation and Need in the Distribution of Training Budgets

    J Twomey, Judith Tomkins et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•1994•References: 1

TWOMEY J., TOMKINS J. M. and TOPHAM N. (1994) Allocation and need in the distribution of training budgets: the case of English Training and Enterprise Councils, Reg. Studies 28, 495–510. The Department of Employment in its White Paper, Employment for the 1990s, outlined a series of measures designed to improve barriers to employment and training provision, arising from a more general recognition that the UK was failing to deliver high quality voc…

  • The Changing Spatial Structure of Manufacturing Plant in Great Britain, 1976 to 1987

    Open Access•Judith Tomkins, J Twomey•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1990•References: 7

This paper is concerned with changes in the stock of manufacturing plant at national, regional, and county levels, over the period 1976-1987. Using information provided by the annual Census of Production, the focus of the analysis is size-specific spatial change in manufacturing unit numbers, where size is defined in terms of employment bands. For Great Britain as a whole, a decline of over 20% in total unit numbers is recorded, with higher rates…

  • Establishment Migration

    Open Access•J Twomey•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Despite significant advances in spatial interaction methodology and modelling, the analysis of establishment migration has exhibited only limited progress. In particular, such analysis has concentrated on approximating movement by a continuous probability process. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to illustrate the fact that establishment relocation is, and can be, more appropriately modelled as a discrete distribution process; second,…
