  • Ritual Body Postures, Channeling, and the Ecstatic Body Trance

    Open Access•Felicitas D Goodman•ARTICLE•Anthropology of Consciousness•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this discussion, attention is focused on the neurophysiological changes recorded in the laboratory during experiences termed religious, since they facilitate contact with the alternate, the sacred reality. The experiences examined are "ritual body posture and ecstatic trance" and "channeling," that is possession. Contrary to previously held opinion based solely on observation, laboratory tests reveal certain differences, indicating that we are…

  • The discomfiture of religious experience

    Felicitas D Goodman•ARTICLE•Religion•1991•References: 1

We live in an age where major and minor structured and unstructured cults are mushrooming, most of them aiming at achieving an ecstatic or religious experience. Rather than objective inquiry, reaction to them is often passionate, unreasoning, even vituperous to an extent that seems out of proportion to their relative size of clientele. On the basis of anthropological fieldwork with Apostolic congregations in the U.S.A., Mexico and Yucatán, and as…

  • A Trance Dance with Masks

    Felicitas D Goodman•ARTICLE•TDR/The Drama Review•1990

Several times a year at the Cuyamungue Institute in New Mexico groups of participants in my workshops get together under my guidance to make masks and perform a dramatic dance. What distinguishes our performance from other similar ones is that our ideas and imagery do not come about by rational planning, but originate in a nonordinary dimension of reality, to which we gain access via a particular kind of change of consciousness-the religious tran…

  • Body Posture and the Religious Altered State of Consciousness

    Open Access•Felicitas D Goodman•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1986•Cited by: 9•References: 12

During the experimental induction of changed states of consciousness in student volunteers, the physical changes and experiential reports were somewhat comparable to those observed also in religious ritual, especially in Pentecostal services. There were a number of inconsistencies, however. I hypothesized that these might have arisen due to neglecting posture as a component. Subsequently, I conducted five series of experiments using postures from…

Similarities are found between magic and parapsychology in (1) conditions that facilitate the manifestation of magical and psi phenomena, (2) the mental processes implicated as effective in producing magical and psi phenomena, (3) the basic princi…

Glossolalia tape-recorded from four groups -Englishand Spanish-speaking showed characteristics common to all groups. It is a noncommunicative behavior of vocalization. Although the phonetic inventory and the grouping of sounds vary somewhat from group to group, these are stereotyped within the group and rigidly adhered to. An analysis of the phonology, accent pattern, and intonation shows the individual utterance to have a threshold of onset, a b…
