Two German Perspectives on a German Discussion
This contribution results from a place of serious discomfort regarding recent public and academic discussions in Germany, where Holocaust memory and its political instrumentalization have seemed to produce a growing dogmatism, harming academic freedom. Because we both direct university research centers in Berlin and Los Angeles dedicated to the study of the Holocaust, we have decided to join forces and share our particular German perspectives on …

In rund 30 Beiträgen akzentu…

La persécution nationale-socialiste des Juifs dans les territoires annexés, 1935-1945
Ordinary Jews
To entitle this book Ordinary Jews was a bold choice, evoking Christopher Browning’s Ordinary Germans, which influenced a generation of Holocaust scholars and students. Evgeny Finkel does not shy away from big goals. Since most major genocide studies hitherto have not analyzed how members of targeted groups respond to violence, the author addresses an important gap. His aim is to contribute to the theoretical understanding of human behavior under…

Mir aber zerriss es das Herz
Peregrinations into the Void?” German Jews and their Knowledge about the Armenian Genocide during the Third Reich
The February 2006 issue of the European edition of Time magazine contained a DVD dedicated to the subject of the genocide of the Armenian people. The text introducing the documentary, produced by the French-German TV network arte , said, “‘Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?’ Hitler posed this rhetorical question on August 22, 1939, before embarking upon his campaign to exterminate six million European Jews and othe…
Öffentliche Wohlfahrt und Judenverfolgung
A Historikerstreit? A Reply to Nathan Stoltzfus's Response
During the brutal factory raid at the end of February 1943, the Gestapo rounded up thousands of Berlin Jews at their forced labor sites and brought them to various collection points. The Gestapo immediately singled out two thousand Jews in “mixed marriages” and transferred them to a separate building in the Rosenstrasse. The traditional view of the events, which Stoltzfus promotes, is that after a week-long demonstration by their relatives, Goebb…
The Factory Action and the Events at the Rosenstrasse in Berlin
On 27 February 1943 in Nazi Germany the Gestapo brutally arrested more than ten thousand Jewish men and women. Martin Riesenburger, later the Chief Rabbi of the German Democratic Republic, recalled that day as “the great inferno.” This large-scale raid marked the beginning of the final phase of the mass deportations, which had been under way since October 1941. Also interned in Berlin were people who, according to NS terminology, lived in so-call…

The German Council of Municipalities ( Deutscher Gemeindetag ) and the Coordination of Anti-Jewish Local Politics in the Nazi State
This article examines the role played by municipalities and local governments in the widening persecution of Jews in 1930s Nazi Germany, focusing on municipal initiatives to exclude Jews from public markets, and to expropriate Jewish property and possessions. Municipal discriminatory measures were often coordinated by the German Council of Municipalities, which linked communal administrations to various state ministries. By exploring the interact…
Was There a Reformed Balance of Power System or Cooperative Great Power Hegemony?
PAUL SCHROEDER'S ESSAY ON THE VIENNA SETTLEMENT AND THE BALANCE OF POWER touches on two major fields of research: the actual distribution of power and operation of the system, and the language and practices of the Vienna settlement. He argues we need not redefine the concept of balance of power with respect to the Vienna system of 1815 or understand it differently. For him, settlement did not represent a particular, modified kind of balance of po…
