  • Apparent Type 2 Sonatas and Reversed Recapitulations in the Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Steven Vande Moortele•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 19

In a small number of sonata forms scattered across the nineteenth century, the development is followed immediately by a return of the subordinate theme, the main theme coming back only later or not at all. How to interpret these forms - often casually referred to as sonata forms with 'reversed recapitulation' - has been a topic of debate among theorists within the newFormenlehre. While some (e.g. Hepokoski and Darcy 2006, Smith 2019 and Hepokoski…

  • The Sorcerer as Apprentice

    Open Access•Steven Vande Moortele•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2019

Near the beginning of the overture to Wagner’s first opera, Die Feen, appears a strikingly unusual harmonic progression: a string of five major triads related by ascending fifths that, as a non-functional sequence of back-relating applied dominants, has a centrifugal effect that quickly spins out of tonal control. After showing how this progression is connected to the magical subject matter of the opera, the article analyses both the progression …

  • The Romantic Overture and Musical Form from Rossini to Wagner

    Open Access•Steven Vande Moortele•BOOK•Romantic Overture and Musical…•2017

In this book Steven Vande Moortele offers a comprehensive account of operatic and concert overtures in continental Europe between 1815 and 1850. Discussing a broad range of works by German, French, and Italian composers, it is at once an investigation of the Romantic overture within the context of mid-nineteenth century musical culture and an analytical study that focuses on aspects of large-scale formal organization in the overture genre. While …

  • Formal Functions and Retrospective Reinterpretation in the First Movement of Schubert's String Quintet

    Open Access•Nancy J Martins, Nathan John Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2014•Cited by: 8

The first movement of Schubert's String Quintet, D. 956, is among the early nineteenth-century repertoire's clearest examples of what Janet Schmalfeldt has called 'form as the process of becoming'. In this article we show how the governing formal principle of the movement's exposition is the conflation of distinct and typically consecutive formal functions. The result is an extraordinary chain of form-functional overlaps, requiring the analyst to…

  • Form, Narrative and Intertextuality in Wagner's Overture to Der fliegende Holländer

    Open Access•Steven Vande Moortele•ARTICLE•Music Analysis•2013•Cited by: 1

In this essay I analyse the form of Wagner's overture to Der fliegende Holländer (1841) as part of a constellation that also includes the composer's published programme for the overture as well as the stage action and a few key musical events in the opera. To that end, I use analytical tools inspired by the 'new Formenlehre' (William Caplin's theory of formal functions and James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy's theory of sonata form) in conjunction w…
