  • Social contact with Covid-19 as a factor influencing corona anxiety in India

Open Access•Debaraj Das, Suchitra Pal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is probably the worst in history, in terms of its impact on mental health. In this context, a number of possible moderators of mental health have been studied, but research on whether direct social contact with COVID-19 influences what has been referred to as “corona anxiety” is largely absent, especially in developing countries. This study attempted to examine the impact of demographics, risk percepti…

  • Cardiovascular Stress Reactivity and Health

    Anna C Whittaker, Annie T Ginty et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2021

OBJECTIVE: High cardiovascular reactions to psychological stress are associated with the development of hypertension, systemic atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. However, it has become apparent that low biological stress reactivity also may have serious consequences for health, although less is known about the mechanisms of this. The objectives of this narrative review and opinion article are to summarize and consider where we are now i…

  • Monitoring treatment harm in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome

Open Access•Graham Mcphee, Adrian Baldwin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2021•References: 16

The use of graded exercise therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy for myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome has attracted considerable controversy. This controversy relates not only to the disputed evidence for treatment efficacy but also to widespread reports from patients that graded exercise therapy, in particular, has caused them harm. We surveyed the National Health Service-affiliated myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue…

  • Defying the IRA

    Open Access•Brian M Hughes, Brian Hughes•BOOK•Defying the IRA?•2017

This book examines the grass-roots relationship between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the civilian population during the Irish Revolution. It is primarily concerned with the attempts of the militant revolutionaries to discourage, stifle, and punish dissent among the local populations in which they operated, and the actions or inactions by which dissent was expressed or implied. Focusing on the period of guerilla war against British rule fro…

  • A Taxometric Analysis of Type-D Personality

Eamonn Ferguson, Lynn Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2009

OBJECTIVE: To test the dimensionality of Type-D personality, using taxometric procedures, to assess if Type-D personality is taxonic or dimensional. Type-D personality is treated as a categorical variable and caseness has been shown to be a risk factor for poor prognosis in coronary heart disease. However, at present, there is no direct evidence to support the assumption that Type D is categorical and able to differentiate true cases from noncase…

  • Access to Social Support in Life and in the Laboratory

    Open Access•Aoife O''Donovan, Aoife O’donovan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 30

Social support is associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk. We examined the effects of perceived network support and availability of functional support in the laboratory on blood pressure and heart rate (HR) reactivity to acute stress. When functional support was available, participants with low perceived network support had significantly lower HR reactivity than participants with high perceived network support ( p = .04). Conversely, wh…

  • Social Support at University Scale, a Brief Index

    Open Access•Brian M Hughes•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

A brief, 3-item index of social support among college students, the Social Support at University Scale, is introduced. Its psychometric properties are examined in a sample of 90 college students (51 women, 39 men) and compared with those of an equivalent scale distributed among 100 university staff (67 women, 33 men). The Short-Form Social Support Questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were also a…
