  • Ways forward in transdisciplinary research: Insights from case studies on marine and coastal conflict transformations

    Open Access•Mello Ngr, Peter Christie et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Futures•2025•References: 3

Transdisciplinary research has been put forward as a means to foster a radical shift in traditional scientific paradigms by promoting knowledge democracy while tackling wicked problems. This paper analyses how local social-ecological dynamics and institutional realities affect the way in which transdisciplinary research generates knowledge and develops sustainability pathways in diverse marine and coastal conflict contexts. Drawing on a cross-cas…

  • South Africa’s EIA Screening Tool: A preliminary study of how users perceive its accuracy and utility

Michael Lambrecht, Merle Sowman et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2023

Recognising the value of GIS in screening environmental impacts, the South African government has introduced a web-based Screening Tool as a mandatory part of the EIA application process. The Tool draws on numerous databases to depict sensitive attributes of proposed development sites. Enforcement of the Tool has implications for how EIAs are conducted, in terms of both scope and cost. In this paper we present the results of preliminary research …

  • Rights, Resources, Rezoning and the Challenges of Governance in South Africa's Oldest Marine Protected Area

    Open Access•Ella-Kari Muhl, Ella‐Kari Muhl et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Society•2020

This research examines the rezoning of Africa's oldest Marine Protected Area (MPA), the Tsitsikamma National Park (TNP) MPA. In December 2016, the TNP MPA was rezoned from 'no-take' to a partially open MPA to provide access for local fishing communities. Here, we examine the different values and beliefs that influence how diverse stakeholders perceive the rezoning process and the subsequent implications for marine conservation. Our research draws…

  • A synthesis of three decades of socio-ecological change in False Bay, South Africa: Setting the scene for multidisciplinary research and management

    Open Access•Maya C Pfaff, Renae C Logston et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2019

Over the past three decades, marine resource management has shifted conceptually from top-down sectoral approaches towards the more systems-oriented multi-stakeholder frameworks of integrated coastal management and ecosystem-based conservation. However, the successful implementation of such frameworks is commonly hindered by a lack of cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer, especially between natural and social sciences. This review represents a h…

  • Rethinking capitalist transformation of fisheries in South Africa and India

Open Access•Ajit Menon, Merle Sowman et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2018

The industrialization of fisheries and the growth of a capitalist sector within fisheries have received considerable scholarly attention. For the most part, scholars have emphasized how capitalism has led to privatization of the commons, forced small-scale resource users into wage labor, and marginalized the sector. This analysis does not, however, explain the continued presence of such a vibrant and important small-scale sector in fisheries thro…
