Faces of the Aftermath of Visible & Invisible Violence & Loss
As a victim/cosurvivor, my experiences with the criminal justice system have called me to confront hard truths and the brutal facts of coming to terms with death, life, meaning, responsibility, and healing in innumerable ways. The real and tangible balance as a practitioner, victim, and healer are oftentimes disconnected from theory, practice, and life and death experiences. What does it mean to be human in the processes of restoration and reconc…

Transformative Teams in Health Care
This paper describes social work pedagogy and outcomes in a multi-year longitudinal interprofessional education (IPE) course incorporating B.S.W, and M.S.S.W. students. Social work students participated in an IRB-approved mixed-method study designed to evaluate individual growth and identity transformation throughout the two-semester course. Students' semi-structured reflection papers (n=113) were analyzed qualitatively to identify core themes. S…
Supporting Parent Caregivers of Children with Life-Limiting Illness
The well-being of parents is essential to the well-being of children with life-limiting illness. Parents are vulnerable to a range of negative financial, physical, and psychosocial issues due to caregiving tasks and other stressors related to the illness of their child. Pediatric palliative care practitioners provide good care to children by supporting their parents in decision-making and difficult conversations, by managing pain and other sympto…
Examining Late-Life Functional Limitation Trajectories and Their Associations With Underlying Onset, Recovery, and Mortality
The analysis advances understanding of late-life functioning by focusing on the heterogeneity of functional limitation experience, appropriately accounting for the relation between functional limitation and mortality and linking long-term patterns with short-term changes in functional limitation
When Public Tragedies Happen
Although an expansive literature exists on individual experiences after a catastrophic event, there is less attention to how the community as a social structure experiences a significant tragedy. These public tragedies create disruptions across multiple domains of community functioning. Using the Community Capacity Model (Hart, 1999) as a framework for assessment, outcomes of a public tragedy are described. Additionally, community practice approa…
Adolescent Cancer Survivors
Adolescent cancer survivors face psychological effects that can include isolation, poor peer relations, anxiety, depression, and fear of recurrence, which can increase their risk for psychological late effects and poor health posttreatment. The purpose of this exploratory analysis was to understand the experiences of adolescent cancer survivors, with a particular focus on identity, health promotion, and meaning making. In-depth interviews were co…
Controlling Costs Without Compromising Quality
BACKGROUND: Unit costs of health services are substantially higher in the United States than in any other developed country in the world, without a correspondingly healthier population. An alternative payment structure, especially for high volume, high cost episodes of care (eg, total knee replacement), is needed to reward high quality care and reduce costs. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample of administrative claims data was used to measure …
Promoting Healthy Development Among Survivors of Adolescent Cancer
Cancer-surviving adolescents face significant health challenges including both physical and psychological late effects as they transition to young adulthood. A cancer diagnosis during adolescence, a time of social independence and increased personal decision making, can cause significant social and emotional struggles that may impair the ability of the adolescent to make health-promoting decisions and avoid risky behaviors such as substance use. …
Lesbian Parent Activism and Meaning-Making in the Current Political Environment
This article discusses the impact of lesbian mothers' activism on legislation and personal well-being. Using a meaning reconstruction framework, the activism of lesbian parents is evaluated as a source of resilience and strength in the current political climate. A case history of one community where lesbian mothers formed a local coalition in response to a statewide proposition to ban same-sex marriage in Texas is described. This community exampl…
Chapter 11. Caregivers of Children with Cancer
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, families experience a devastating life event with immediate and long-term impact on quality of life, actvities of daily living, family dynamics, self identity, parental role, and sense of meaning in the world. However, despite the trauma, more recent studies are highlighting the resilience and functioning of families facing cancer in childhood. This chapter explores these family dynamics
Pediatric palliative and end‐of‐life care
Working with children at the end of life is full of witnessing the absolute strength of the human spirit and the irrepressible joy of children. It is also one of the most profoundly painful clinical experiences a social worker is likely to confront. It is full of hope and despair, belief and fear, compassion and sadness. Pediatric palliative care is vital work that requires a distinct set of clinical skills. This paper will address both the neces…
Using Clinical Variables to Estimate the Risk of Patient Mortality
The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) uses information from hospital bills, such as age, sex, and diagnoses, to estimate statistical models for the probability, or risk, of death during and after hospital stays. The average risk estimates (expected death rates) are compared with the actual death rates to identify potentially poor quality of care. However, the methods have been criticized as inadequate and an often cited reason is the fa…
