Global Literacies Research Diversity
The essay explores the issue of globalization of literacy education research and offers a manifesto to ignite a commitment for a global eclectic for literacy education research. The manifesto’s tenets are drawn from an interrogation of the current dominance of a Western-centric orientation, and from the interviews with postcolonial critics, indigenous sages, global and southern scholars
Global Educational Research in Western Times
Knowledge Globalization Within and Across the People’s Republic of China and the United States
The study examines globalization within and across China and the United States in conjunction with a portrayal of the nature of the scholarly endeavors over the past 10 years in the two preeminent educational research journals of these countries. By extensive analyses of topics, methodology, and citations the research clarifies the global and local forces at work within and across countries, including the types of internationalization occurring b…
Multimedia Digital Engagements by Readers and Learners
Various researchers, theorists, and applied scholars are reinvigorating, expanding, and shifting our view of reading comprehension as they explore the nature of the meaning making within digital environments. These scholars include: social anthropologists interested in digital literacies as literacy practices and events; cultural and critical theorists intent on studying the politics of individuals and group identities; linguists including socio‐…
Multilingual Practices, Critical Literacies, and Visual Culture
In this essay, we review and comment on three books that focus on language, literacy, and visual and cultural communication: English as a Local Language: Post‐Colonial Identities and Multilingual Practices by Christina Higgins ; Literacy and Power by Hilary Janks; and South African Visual Culture , edited by Jeanne van Eeden and Amanda du Preez. Each of these books takes a critical stance toward language, literacy, and culture and each is focused…
Shaping New Literacies Research
In the Handbook of Research on New Literacies, editors Julie Coiro, Michele Knobel, Colin Lankshear, and Donald J. Leu have compiled a set of papers representing the most comprehensive discussion to date of research and theoretical perspectives in this emerging field. The editors selected authors who are making important forays into our understanding of these new literacies—their nature, influence, and potential. The Handbook offers significant i…
Examining Literate Lives as Students Engage With Multiple Literacies
Our conception of the new literacies (those associated with digital technologies and multimodal representations) is grounded in an understanding of multiple literacies as social practices. Based on our observations of students in supportive classroom environments, individuals and groups afforded opportunity to engage as teams with digital literacies learn an array of new ways to explore and share ideas. These individuals are able to contribute to…
How Will Literacy Be Assessed in the Next Millennium
In this “RRQ Snippet,” several researchers share their ideas about trends in literacy assessment, including high‐stakes testing, the influence of technology, and assessment to inform instructional practice
Portfolios
The authors discuss the history, theory, and research around the use of portfolios, emphasizing particularly practical implications for and implementation in the classroom
The Effects of Reading and Writing upon Thinking Critically
Functional literacy in school settings
Meaningfulness is an essential ingredient if literacy potentials are to be realized for an individual or a society. Literacy develops in conjunction with the extent to which a society or an individual within a society values literacy. Therefore, educators need to consider the nature of literacy and the extent to which it is both valued and meaningful if they are to remain sensitive to what students can accomplish with written language

Developing Readers' Knowledge through Analogy
UNFAMILIAR INFORMATION is often introduced to readers through analogy. The effect of this practice was investigated by examining three possible explanations of analogy's function: to activate specific analogous knowledge, to activate generally related knowledge, or to supply information which readers use to fashion their own comparisons. American high school students attempted to learn about the game of cricket from prose materials which were var…
Association between age, blood lead concentration, and serum 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol levels in children
Serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25-CC), the form of vitamin D active in stimulating intestinal absorption of calcium, phosphorus, and lead, were determined in 177 human subjects ages 1 to 16 yr. Significant negative association (r = -0.88) was observed between serum 1.25-CC levels and blood lead concentrations over the entire range of blood lead levels, 12 to 120 micrograms/dl. Adolescents ages 11 to 16 yr had serum 1,25-CC level…
A cross-cultural comparison of item analysis data on the revised Itpa
Item difficulty levels were determined for seven of the subtests of the revised ITPA using a preliminary normative sample of Australian children. It was clear from the results that uneven grading of difficulty levels led to problems of premature application of ceilings on some subtests. Similar analyses then were carried out on the original North American standardisation data, thus allowing direct comparisons of facility indices. The results high…
The Discourse Processing Operations of Children
EXAMINED THE EXTENT AND TYPE OF INFORMATION rendered by children during recall of connected discourse. This involved a comparison of selected good and poor readers' memory of text to the content and structure of the text itself. The content and structure of the text was defined in terms of its propositional structure, interpropositional structure, and the structural importance of the idea units to the theme. Information appearing both in the reca…
