Five-year-old children engage temporal but not frontal mechanisms during morphosyntactic processing of sentences
The processing of morphemes, the smallest linguistic units that create differences in meaning, can have cascading effects on language and literacy development. The neural underpinnings of morphological processing have mostly been examined in school-aged children. We examined if phonological and semantic mechanisms play a role during morphosyntactic processing in auditory sentences in five-year-old children using functional MRI. We focused on morp…
Neural specificity for semantic and syntactic processing in Spanish-English bilingual children
The links between perfectionistic cognitions, L2 achievement and willingness to communicate
A sculpting effect of reading on later representational quality of phonology revealed by multi-voxel pattern analysis in young children
Decomposition in early stages of learning novel morphologically derived words
The Effects of Foreign Language and Religiosity on Moral Decisions
The primary purpose of this study was to examine the association of foreign language use and religiosity to moral decision-making in the context of a realistic set of scenarios about the COVID -19 pandemic. We used the CNI model in which four variants of a single dilemma manipulated norms and consequences, which are the defining characteristics of deontology and utilitarianism, respectively. A secondary purpose of the study was to investigate the…
Developmental differences of large-scale functional brain networks for spoken word processing
A dual-stream dissociation for separate phonological and semantic processing has been implicated in adults' language processing, but it is unclear how this dissociation emerges with development. By employing a graph-theory based brain network analysis, we compared functional interaction architecture during a rhyming and meaning judgment task of children (aged 8-12) with adults (aged 19-26). We found adults had stronger functional connectivity str…
Temporal cortex activation explains children’s improvement in math attitudes
Math attitudes are related to achievement, yet we do not know how the brain supports changes in math attitudes. 51 children (54.9% female, 45.1% male; 37.3% White, 33.3% Black, 11.8% Latino, 5.9% Asian, 11.8% Other) solved a multiplication task inside the scanner when they were approximately 11 (time 1; T1) and 13 (time 2; T2) years old (i.e., mean age). Results revealed clusters in the left middle to superior temporal gyri at T1 associated with …
Developmental differences in neural connectivity for semantic processing in youths with autism
BACKGROUND: Youths with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rely more on lower-level visual processing as revealed by greater occipital activation, yet less effectively engage higher-level processing of modality-independent semantic knowledge as indicated by reduced frontal activation, compared to typically developing (TD) youths. However, little is known about age-dependent differences in neural connectivity during semantic processing in youths with …
Reading Disability in Chinese Children Learning English as an L2
To examine whether there are common or specific deficits of reading disability (RD) in first (L1) and second languages (L2), Chinese children (9–11 years, N = 76) with or without RD who learn English as an L2 were studied during a visual word rhyming judgment task. Evidence was found for common deficits in L1 and L2 in visuo-orthographic processes in left inferior temporal gyrus and left precuneus, as well as in phonological processes in left dor…
The Relation of Language Context and Religiosity to Trilemma Judgments
Utilitarian judgments maximize benefit for the most people, whereas deontological judgments are based on moral norms. Previous work shows that people tend to make more utilitarian judgments in their second compared to their native language, whereas higher religiosity is associated with more deontological judgments. However, it is not known whether the effect of language context is moderated by the religiosity of the individual. We hypothesized th…
The Effect of Phonological Structure on Visual Word Access in Bilinguals
Development of Lexical and Sentence Level Context Effects for Dominant and Subordinate Word Meanings of Homonyms
Quick, automatic, and general activation of orthographic and phonological representations in young readers
Second through 6th graders were presented with nonword primes (orthographic, pseudohomophone, and control) and target words displayed for durations (30 and 60 ms) that were brief enough to prevent complete processing. Word reading skills were assessed by 3 word and nonword naming tasks. Good readers exhibited more orthographic priming than poor readers at both durations and more pseudohomophone priming at the short duration only. This suggests th…
Acquisition of the Mental State Verb Know by 2- to 5-Year-Old Children
Influences of schooling and urban-rural residence on gender differences in cognitive abilities and academic achievement
