Using machine learning to identify incentives in forestry policy: Towards a new paradigm in policy analysis
As 2021 saw the launch of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, it highlighted the need to prepare for success over the decade and to understand what public economic and financial incentives exist to support sustainable forest and landscape restoration. To date, Initiative 20 × 20, a coalition of 18 Latin American countries, has committed to place 50 million hectares under restoration and conservation by 2030. Understanding the publ…
Cooperation, technical education and politics in early agricultural policy in Catalonia (1914–24)
After the crisis of the late nineteenth century, the role of the state in European agriculture expanded to many new areas: education and technical innovation; commercial policies and market regulations; farm support policies, and sometimes interventions in property rights. The development of these policies was a difficult and costly process, without the intervention of intermediary organisations like agricultural cooperatives and farmers’ associa…

The Rabassaire Struggle: Long-Term Analysis of a Social and Political Movement
The rabassaire struggle of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries represented the most intense unrest in the Catalan countryside since the peasant rebellions of the fifteenth century, and it was one of the main social movements in rural Western Europe in this period. In this article we examine the rabassaire struggle over a period of roughly 150 years. Following Charles Tilly, we understand this social movement as a form of political a…

State Intervention in Wine Markets in the Early 20 Th Century: Why Was It So Different in France and Spain
In the early 20 th century, governments not only used trade policy to protect domestic agricultural markets, but they also introduced regulations affecting quality, quantity and prices. In this article I assess the differences in the state intervention in wine markets in two major wine-producing countries, France and Spain, and try to explain the reasons for them. To do so, I examine the specific features of their markets and productive systems, …
The emergence of winemaking cooperatives in Catalonia
This article traces the emergence of winemaking cooperatives in Catalonia, one of southern Europe’s main winegrowing regions. I exp…

Sharecropping and the management of large rural estates in Catalonia, 1850-1950
This article examines the role of sharecropping in the operation of great estates in Catalonia (Spain) from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Noting that the sharecropping option was not the fruit of inertia, but of the failure of alternatives, we look at the various factors which led to its predominance. Next, we show the adaptability of sharecropping to a variety of ecological and social contexts. Finally, we argue that the backw…
