  • Mount Hermon

    Julien Aliquot•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the…•2025

At 2,814 m high, Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Shaykh) is a limestone barrier between the Mediterranean coast and the Syrian steppe. The travelers and scholars who have climbed the mountain since the nineteenth century have been seeking biblical souvenirs. Yet they discovered many pagan sanctuaries of the Roman period on their way. They collected Greek inscriptions also mentioning holy places and villages. These texts, with the results of archaeological…

  • Roman Colonies in the Near East

    Julien Aliquot•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the…•2025

This chapter traces the history of Roman colonization in the Near East (including Mesopotamia) from its origins, in the city of Berytus under Augustus, to its latest reminiscences in the Christian empire of Byzantium and beyond. After the classic studies by Fergus Millar (1990) and Maurice Sartre (2001), the collection of available data can take advantage of the progress of epigraphy and numismatics in the Near East. The updating of their interpr…

  • A Greek graffito from Wādī Rāǧil (northeast Jordan)

Rafe Harahsheh, Julien Aliquot et al.•ARTICLE•Semitica et Classica•2024

A new Greek graffito from the basaltic desert of northeastern Jordan is published here. It commemorates the passage or stay of its author in the Wādī Rāǧil. Numerous Safaitic inscriptions already testified to the presence of nomadic pastoralists in this natural corridor between the Ḥawrān, the Azraq oasis, and the Wādī al-Sirḥān, on the margins of the Roman province of Arabia. The onomastics of the text find parallels in regional, Safaitic and Na…

  • Doves for the brave

    Open Access•Nabil Bader, Julien Aliquot•ARTICLE•Syria•2024

The publication of a new Latin military inscription from Umm al-Quṭṭayn in northeast Jordan is an opportunity to review the history of this site which belonged to the territory of Bostra, capital city of the province of Arabia, following the annexation of the Nabataean kingdom to the Roman Empire. This dedication refers to the construction of a dovecote tower by a protector subordinate to the duke Flavius Severinus and active in the region during…

  • A Safaitic–Greek Graffito by a Shepherd in the Black Desert of Jordan

Open Access•Hani Hayajneh, Rafe Harahsheh et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2024

A newly discovered bilingual rock‐cut graffito from Qāʿ Raʿd is presented here. This Safaitic–Greek inscription recalls the stay of a shepherd and his flock in the basaltic desert of northeast Jordan. Although numerous documents have largely confirmed the presence of nomadic pastoralists in the same area, proven bilingual examples are exceptionally rare. This discovery once again raises questions about the role of the Greek language among the pop…

  • Epigraphic harvest at the Dead Sea

    Younis al‐Shdaifat, Younis al-Shdaifat et al.•ARTICLE•Semitica et Classica•2023

This paper presents seven Christian funerary stelae that were recently discovered in southern Jordan at Ġawr al-Ṣāfī, the ancient Zoora in Palaestina Tertia. Six of them bear ordinary Greek epitaphs. The seventh is much more outstanding, as its inscription is written in both Greek and Aramaic. This monument dated to 417 ad is also unique in that it testifies to the use of the Syriac alphabet within the local Christian community in late antiquity

This article offers a comprehensive study of the Capitoline games celebrated at Heliopolis in Roman Syria. As a prelude, documents referring to competitions held at Alexandria and Berytus shall be removed from relevant sources dealing with this contest. Coins and late antique accounts suggest that Heliopolis had its own games only after Septimius Severus separated it from Berytus to make it an independent colony. The Heliopolitan Capitolia were m…

    Julien Aliquot•ARTICLE•Syria•2004

It is an established fact that the cultural exchanges between Phoenicia and Egypt date back long before the Macedonian conquest of the Near East. Yet the study of the Phoenician and Lebanese monuments and cults also proves that the elements which were borrowed to the Egyptian religion in the area came through the Graeco-Roman culture during the Early Roman period. First, the hellenized cults of the major Egyptian deities may have been worshipped …
