  • The Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Suicide

Michael Cholbi, Paolo Stellino•EDITOR•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of the…•2026

Suicide is a perennial subject of philosophical interest, but also one with a great deal of contemporary currency. While multi-disciplinarity is essential in the study of suicide, some of the key questions concerning suicide are unavoidably philosophical: Can suicide be, in certain situations, morally permissible or even morally obligatory? Can it be a rational choice? What are our obligations toward suicidal individuals? And how should we even d…

  • Was nietzsche a moral relativist

    Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2026

Nietzsche has long been associated with relativism of some sort, particularly in relation to moral values, although contemporary Nietzsche scholars tend to dismiss this interpretation as misleading. Surprisingly, the secondary literature on this topic is not extensive, and to date, there seems to be no in-depth study dedicated to assessing the reasons for which we should or should not regard Nietzsche as a moral relativist. This article aims to p…

  • Projetivismo dos valores em Nietzsche (parte II)

    Open Access•Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•Cadernos Nietzsche•2025

  • Nietzschean Themes in Béla Tarr's The Turin Horse

    Open Access•Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•Film-Philosophy•2024

Béla Tarr's last feature film The Turin Horse (2011) begins with a prologue that narrates Friedrich Nietzsche's mental breakdown in Turin in 1889, which was allegedly prompted by his witnessing a cab driver brutally whipping his horse. Nietzsche's name is not mentioned again in the film, and the viewer is left wondering what connection, if any, exists between the Nietzsche story and the film's narrative. Scholars often refer to one or another asp…

  • Edward W. Said leitor de Nietzsche

    Open Access•Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•Cadernos Nietzsche•2021

  • Nietzsche and Dostoevsky

Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2018

This volume collects eight essays on Nietzsche and Dostoevsky written by scholars from different humanities fields. What unites them is the idea that, after more than a century, the writings of Nietzsche and Dostoevsky and the relations between them still represent a major challenge for contemporary readers. The range of subjects that the authors tackle is wide, from crime, truth, art, and nihilism to pessimism, tragedy, and the unconscious. The …

  • Die Funken des freien Geistes

Paolo Stellino•ARTICLE•The Journal of Nietzsche Studies•2014

This volume presents a collection of papers on Nietzsche written by Volker Gerhardt over the past twenty-five years. The trait d'union among them is the idea that, more than a hundred years after Nietzsche's death, the sparks of his thought—the Funken of Gerhardt's title—can still ignite fires in contemporary readers, even to the extent that for no other nineteenth-century thinker is the definition of “arsonist” more appropriate. The range of subj…
