Helen Q Kivnick, Marcie D Jefferys et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2003•References: 16

Although children's well-being is the ultimate concern of child welfare services, the serious consequences of abuse and neglect have directed the system to a primary focus on the dangers in a child's environment. Child protective service workers have historically found little time to attend to individual and family strengths, while complying with laws and mandated procedures that prioritize minimizing harm and correcting problems. • The arts as healing

    Helen Q Kivnick, Joan M Erikson•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1983•References: 1

The relationship between artistic involvement and individual mental health is considered, and the concept of "healing" is differentiated from that of "therapy." Seven properties of art experience are identified which, when developed, have contributed to patients' recovery from mental illness. Implications of these properties for clinical programs, and the related value of art experience for non-patients, are discussed
