Sunflowers in the Ruins
This paper looks at the depiction of nature and the environment in contemporary Ukrainian anti-war music videos, inspecting the videos through an ecocritical and ecomusicological lens—and thus adding an environmental dimension to the existing scholarship on Ukrainian music. My goal is to call attention to the long-term impacts of the Russo-Ukrainian war on the non-human by exploring the ways in which landscapes and other features of nature are co…
Ukraine’s “Invisible Battalion”
This conceptual essay addresses a gap in the literature regarding first-person perspectives of women veterans. It applies a feminist lens to a thematic analysis of first-person narratives by women who participated in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) during the Donbas war in eastern Ukraine (2014–2022) by drawing on qualitative data contained in 25 published textual accounts (in Girls Cutting Their Locks (Podobna, 2018)) and six accounts documen…
Dino Fix
In this essay, I combine ecofeminism, critical animal studies, and vegan studies to analyse the depictions of dinosaurs in a vegan picturebook, Robert Neubecker’s Linus the Vegetarian T. Rex. Because picturebook dinosaurs, like the titular Linus, can mobilize the intense “conceptual interest” in dinosaurs found among young children, I argue that a co-reading of Linus can help initiate conversations and facilitate learning about difficult “adult” …
Not your ordinary drone
Bayraktar', a pop/rap song written by a Ukrainian soldier following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, went viral, spawning various covers, from electronic dance music to hardcore punk. I analyse this digital archive of 19 'Bayraktar' songs, including five that share only the title with Taras Borovok's paradigmatic song, and contextualise it within the broader historical and decolonial frameworks of Ukrainian resistance music, incl…
Mavka as Willow. An Ecofeminist Analysis of Lesja Ukrajinka’s Forest Song
Lesja Ukrajinka’s Lisova pisnja (1911) can be read as an eco-parable about Mavka, the forest nymph who transforms into a willow tree in danger of being felled. This paper provides a pioneering ecofeminist analysis of Lisova pisnja; it revises traditional approaches to the depiction of nature in the drama by combining them with an awareness of anthropogenic environmental degradation (the deforestation of the Volyn’ Polissja where it is set) and an…
A Critical Disability Reading of Lermontov's "Taman'"
This paper provides a critical analysis of literary disability in Mikhail Lermontov's "Taman'," the most famous story in his semiautobiographical novel, A Hero of Our Time (1838-40). It focuses on three disabled characters: the blind boy, the deaf old woman proprietor, and the mad young woman. These characters have traditionally been treated as projections of the hero-narrator's imagination, as part of the story's Gothic aspects, or as metaphors …
To Read or Not to Eat
Anthropomorphic nonhuman animals figure prominently in children’s literature, teaching young readers relevant life lessons and adding variety, humor, and emotional distance to safely consider otherwise traumatizing ideas. Despite its educational and developmental value, however, using animal characters to tell human stories normalizes the very same mechanisms that adult humans use to subjugate real animals. Bringing animal-studies insights to bea…
Narrating Animal Trauma in Bulgakov and Tolstoy
Following the recent “animal turn” in literary studies, which has inspired scholars to revisit traditional human-centered interpretations of texts narrated by animals, this article focuses on the convergence of animal studies and trauma theory. It offers new animal-centered close readings of Tolstoy’s Strider and Bulgakov’s Heart of a Dog, paying attention to animal pain rather than seeing it, and the text as a whole, as an allegory of human soci…
