  • Lost or Found? Empfehlungen zur Mikroarchäologie bei Rettungsgrabungen in Österreich

Open Access•Peter Trebsche, Marlies Verena Außerlechner et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Austriaca•2025

  • A Study of Dog Coprolite from Late Neolithic Pile-Dwelling Site in Slovenia

    Open Access•Tjaša Tolar, Alfred Galik•ARTICLE•Archaeological Discovery•2019

More than 5000 years old dog’s coprolite was found during rescue excavation at Črnelnik pile-dwelling site in Slovenia. Although human and dog diets may overlap considerably, the content of the consumed and digested food, consisting of plant and/or animal remains biologically diverse. While the investigated fossil excrement contained many fish head bones, scales and teeth of Cyprinidae family, we believe that we are dealing with an individual tha…

    Open Access•Andreas G Hei, Alfred Galik et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2019

Bioarchaeological research in Austria has largely been characterised by the lack of institutionalisation for nearly a century. In contrast to the long tradition of biological anthropology research facilities, archaeobotanical and archaeozoological positions only became established in a period from the 1970s till the early 1990s. Forming a cornerstone of the Austrian Archaeological Institute's integration process into the Austrian Academy of Scien…

  • Diet uniformity at an early farming community in northwest Anatolia (Turkey)

    Open Access•Chelsea Budd, Necmi Karul et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2018•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 47

Aktopraklık is a settlement site composed of three areas (A-C) in the Marmara region of northwest Anatolia, with phases of occupation that date to the Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic periods, mid-seventh to mid-sixth millennium bc (ca. 6400-5600 cal. bc). Here, we present 54 human and fauna bone collagen stable isotope results from the site, alongside five modern fish bone collagen isotope results, to examine the nature of human diet. The s…

Open Access•Barbara Horejs, Bogdana Milić et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Prehistory•2015•Citada por: 45•Referencias: 13

The process of Near Eastern neolithization and its westward expansion from the core zone in the Levant and upper Mesopotamia has been broadly discussed in recent decades, and many models have been developed to describe the spread of early farming in terms of its timing, structure, geography and sociocultural impact. Until now, based on recent intensive investigations in northwestern and western Anatolia, the discussion has mainly centred on the i…

  • Data Sharing Reveals Complexity in the Westward Spread of Domestic Animals across Neolithic Turkey

Open Access•Benjamin S Arbuckle, Sarah Whitcher Kansa et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2014

This study presents the results of a major data integration project bringing together primary archaeozoological data for over 200,000 faunal specimens excavated from seventeen sites in Turkey spanning the Epipaleolithic through Chalcolithic periods, c. 18,000-4,000 cal BC, in order to document the initial westward spread of domestic livestock across Neolithic central and western Turkey. From these shared datasets we demonstrate that the westward …

  • Investigations on human and animal remains from a medieval shaft well in Ayasuluk/Ephesos (Turkey)

    Fabian Kanz, Şule Pfeiffer-Taş et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2014

In course of the archaeological survey of Ayasuluk/Ephesos region (Turkey), a shaft well situated at the area of an extensive medieval bathing complex was excavated. In the stratum corresponding to the reign Mehmed II the well-preserved skeletons of two humans, an equine and a canine were recovered. Anthropological analysis of the human skeletons indentified two males aged 22 (± 3) and 36 (± 5) years. The skeleton of the younger individual showed…

Alfred Galik, Barbara Horejs et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2013

  • Purple‐dye Production in Lycia – Results of an Archaeozoological Field Survey in Andriake (South‐west Turkey)

Open Access•Gerhard Forstenpointner, Ursula Quatember et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2007•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 11

In 2003 a substantial deposit of heavily fragmented shells of purple snails was by chance located at the site of Andriake, the ancient port of the Lycian city of Myra near Demre, in southern Turkey. The archaeozoological and archaeological record of a survey project in 2004 proved the identification of a large installation for the production of purple dye. Adjacent to a well preserved Hadrianic granary and partly superimposing the remains of a U‐…
