  • A Public Politics for a Public Profession

    Open Access•Robert J Yinger•ARTICLE•Journal of Teacher Education•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 3

My sister once told me a story about a husband and wife who drove across the country with their three-year-old son. They figured the kid would get bored, but he loved McDonald's, so every night they stopped to eat at one because they thought it would give him something to look forward to. It went well enough until the third night when the kid said, Dad, how come we drive all day and still end up at the same place? --John Gierach (2003, p. 68) Thi…

This article describes learning to teach as a task involving learning to think and act in ways appropriate to the demands of the profession—a task referred to as “learning the language of practice.” The language of practice is described using common sense and practical analyses of knowledge and action. A study of student teachers is presented to illustrate processes and concepts involved in acquiring a language of practice. The paper concludes wi…

  • Research on Teacher Thinking

    Christopher M Clark, Robert J Yinger•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•1977•Cited by: 35•References: 1

A relatively new approach to the study of teaching assumes that what teachers do is affected by what they think. This cognitive information processing approach is concerned with teacher judgment, decision making, and planning. The study of the thinking processes of teachers-how teachers gather, organize, interpret, and evaluate information-is expected to lead to understandings of the uniquely human processess that guide and determine teacher beha…

  • Cued Forgetting

    Open Access•Robert J Yinger, William L Johnson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

This study investigated the effectiveness of a “forgetting cue” under different inter-stimulus intervals. Each S had each combination of 3 list conditions (2 trigrams, no cue; 2 trigrams, with cue; 1 trigram) and 3 inter-stimulus intervals (6, 15, and 40 sec.). Recall of the second trigram was measured. Performance with the cue was significantly better at 6 and 15 sec., while at 40 sec., there was no difference between 3 list conditions
