  • Is music listening an effective intervention for reducing anxiety? A systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled studies

Open Access•Cristina Harney, Judith Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2023

Anxiety is the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder in the EU and 18% of the US population experiences an anxiety disorder at any one time. However, only 20% of individuals experiencing anxiety receive a formally administered intervention, highlighting a need for evidence-based interventions that can be self-administered. Music listening can be flexibly self-administered and may be useful for anxiety reduction, but further evidence is n…

  • Relationships Between Generated Musical Structure, Performers’ Physiological Arousal and Listener Perceptions in Solo Piano Improvisation

Roger T Dean, Freya Bailes•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2016

What musical structures do improvisers produce, and how do these relate to their physiological arousal while performing and to listener perceptions? Nine professional improvisers performed both structured and free improvisations. We hypothesized that increases in performers’ arousal and attention during structural transitions would be reflected by changes in skin conductance. Consistent with the hypothesis, skin conductance changed particularly a…

  • Generative Structures in Improvisation

Roger T Dean, Freya Bailes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2014•References: 12

We assessed the hypothesis elaborated by Pressing and by the first author that improvisation is normally based on the generation of segmental contrasts in musical features. Nine experienced improvisers performed a series of free- and 3-section referent-based pieces, each of about three minutes. Each player undertook eight improvisations with 'referent' instructions, preceded and followed by a free improvisation. A MIDI-equipped grand piano was us…

  • Long-term melodic expectation

    Open Access•Freya Bailes, Charles Delbé•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2009

The report provides a brief account of an experiment whose control conditions produced interestingly counter-intuitive results. The method adapted priming techniques to explore whether imagining well-known melodies would facilitate perceptual discrimination of congruent compared to incongruent melodic continuations in a syllable identification task. This was shown to be the case, but in a subsequent control experiment, imagining an irrelevant lur…

  • The pulse of symmetry

    Open Access•Roger T Dean, Tim Byron et al.•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2009

Darwin proposed that music and dance may be part of courtship display leading to reproduction, and hence preservation of genes. Sexual selection could act on either or both music and dance, but we argue it may act most powerfully on their synergistic rhythmic co-performance. We suggest that motoric and temporal capacities evolved for, and adapted to, essential biological functions were exapted to working drills and to dance, and in combination wi…

  • Listener Detection of Segmentation in Computer-Generated Sound

    Freya Bailes, Roger T Dean•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 23

The controlled manipulation of digitally generated sound in computer music affords new opportunities to investigate the cognitive accessibility of musical features additional to pitch and rhythm. Experiments investigated listeners' detection of segments in computer-generated material, ranging from obvious (Experiment 1) to more subtle and undetectable segmentation (Experiment 2). Experiment 3 compared segment detection using headphones to using l…

  • Listening to the Mind Listening

Stephen Barrass, Mitchell Whitelaw et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo Music Journal•2006

Listening to the Mind Listening (LML) explored whether sonifications can be more than just “noise” in terms of perceived information and musical experience. The project generated an unprecedented body of 27 multichannel sonifications of the same dataset by 38 composers. The design of each sonification was explicitly documented, and there are 88 analytical reviews of the works. The public concert presenting 10 of these sonifications at the Sydney …

  • The use of experience-sampling methods to monitor musical imagery in everyday life

    Open Access•Freya Bailes, Freya A Bailes•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•2006

Little is known about the prevalence or nature of the everyday experience of imagining music in the “mind's ear”. An obstacle has been the reliance on indirect, retrospective reporting. Musical imagery research to date has been limited to the experimenter-centred environment of laboratory studies. This paper considers the use of Experience-Sampling Methods (ESM) to explore musical imagery as it occurs in everyday life. A pilot study applied ESM t…
