  • Agreement Switch in Verb-Echo Answers

Gesoel Ernesto Ribeiro Mendes, Gesoel Mendes et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2024

In this article, we claim that syntactic objects undergoing ellipsis can be targeted by both narrow syntactic and PF operations. We base this conclusion on experimental evidence from the interaction between single conjunct agreement and verb-echo answers in South Slavic, which we show to be derived via verb-stranding VP ellipsis. Adopting the view that Vocabulary Insertion replaces Q-variables on lexical heads (Halle 1991) and ellipsis is a synta…

  • Theme-vowel class indeterminacy and root allomorphy in Slovenian

    Open Access•Marko Simonović, Petra Mišmaš•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2023

Slovenian verbs have been analyzed as displaying non-local root allomorphy which gets triggered across the theme vowel (Božič 2016; 2019). We reevaluate the data (using a larger set of verbs) and reconsider the structure of the verb in Slovenian (focusing primarily on the position of the theme vowel). We show that root allomorphy in Slovenian only occurs in a very limited number of theme-vowel classes, making the inventory of theme-vowel classes …

  • Lowest theme vowels or highest roots? An ‘unaccusative’ theme-vowel class in Slovenian

    Open Access•Marko Simonović, Petra Mišmaš•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2022

This paper focuses on the e/i theme vowel class of verbs in Slovenian to bring together two seemingly unrelated debates: (i) the debate on the correlation between theme vowel classes with certain argument structures and (ii) the debate on the status of derivational affixes within the framework of Distributed Morphology. Our core data come from a list of 108 unaccusative verbs obtained using the adjectival active l-participles as an unaccusativity…

  • Do children use language structure to discover the recursive rules of counting

    Open Access•Rose M Schneider, Jessica Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Psychology•2020

  • Ov Is in the Air

    Open Access•Marko Simonović, Petra Mišmaš•ARTICLE•Linguistica•2020

In this paper we consider several instances of the Slovenian affix ov, which surfaces in many, apparently unrelated contexts. Here we focus on (i) ov in verbs, where it can act as an imperfectivizer or a verbalizer, (ii) ov found in possessive adjectives and kind adjectives derived from nouns, (iii) ov which precedes the adjectiviser (e)n in denominal adjectives, and (iv) ov in nominal declension (acting as a genitive case ending in dual and plur…

  • Elided Clausal Conjunction Is Not the Only Source of Closest-Conjunct Agreement

    Open Access•Boban Arsenijević, Jana Willer‐gold et al.•ARTICLE•Syntax•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 15

A recurring hypothesis about the agreement phenomena generalized as closest-conjunct agreement takes this pattern to result from reduced clausal conjunction, simply displaying the agreement of the verb with the nonconjoined subject of the clause whose content survives ellipsis (Aoun, Benmamoun & Sportiche 1994, 1999; see also Wilder 1997). Closest-conjunct agreement is the dominant agreement pattern in the South Slavic languages Slovenian and Bos…
