Household Histories: Generating Fixity in the Urban Periphery of Northeast Brazil
In urban peripheral neighborhoods in Northeast Brazil, residents invest significant savings, labor, and time into their homes. Such investment has produced stable housing and inheritable assets for generations of residents. This article uses archival and longitudinal ethnographic data from Barra do Ceará, an urban peripheral neighborhood in Fortaleza, to investigate the daily maintenance, renovation, and upkeep that is necessary to generate stabl…

Histories of Conviviality in a Northeast Brazilian Periferia
This article critically discusses conviviality by identifying commonly conflated understandings of the concept including emic, etic, normative, and historically contingent discourses. I argue that conviviality can most usefully be understood as a particular mode of sociality, and as such is necessarily shaped by prior modes of sociality and their attendant values. Conviviality is then applied analytically to participant observation conducted in a…

Much More than a Clinic: Chicago's Free Health Centers 1968-1972
Drawing on archival evidence, I document the emergence and florescence of three free health clinics in Chicago in the late 1960s. I trace the centers' forceful removal by the city's Board of Health, and their subsequent replacement by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FHQCs). I argue that the demise of the free centers is exemplary of a broader trend in US health policy of regulating and diminishing the health care options of poor Americans. By…
Participatory governance in the context of local health councils: Interviews with six local health council presidents in Northeastern Brazil
The aim of this study was to describe the challenges and opportunities faced by local health council presidents in their practice of participatory governance. In-depth interviews were conducted with six presidents at health posts at six neighborhoods located in a single region in a peripheral neighborhood in Fortaleza. The interviews were complemented by participant observation of local health council meetings conducted over a three-year period (…
Fraternity, Dignity, and Democracy: Forms of Value in Northeast Brazil's Health Care Reform Movement
This essay applies Terence Turner’s insight that production is the key to understanding social value to the context of an urban poor community in Fortaleza, Brazil. It uses this insight to address a contemporary tension in the community between democratic values espoused by city and state politicians and local forms of value which glorify fraternity and dignity. I argue that older women’s daily activities (such as courtyard maintenance, siestas, …
Brazilian mothers with HIV: Experiences with diagnosis and treatment in a human rights based health care system
Drawing on in-depth interviews with a group of urban poor HIV-positive mothers in Northeastern Brazil, this essay examines their experiences with HIV medical diagnosis and treatment. It argues that strong social and religious networks as well as the Universal HIV treatment program provide Northeastern Brazilian mothers with forms of support that may be absent in other countries. It further suggests that more research be done to determine how part…
