Young adults learning in formal education and training
Governing the Life Course through Lifelong Learning
The life course in general, and the educational trajectories of young people in particular, comprise a high degree of complexity as they take place in iterative, recursive and interactive negotiation processes in which numerous actors, institutions and discourses are involved. In this paper, an attempt is made to combine two conceptual discussions—Life Course and Governance—bringing them to bear on the examination of how Lifelong Learning (LLL) p…
Regional lifelong learning policies and the social vulnerability of young adults in Girona and Vienna
This article explores the interface between lifelong learning policies and the definition of social vulnerability of young adults in two regions located within the European Union. Girona comprises a constellation of small towns with important industry, service and hospitality sectors. Vienna is a global city where many key international operators are based and employ a large number of highly qualified professionals. The article explores to what e…
Lifelong learning policies shaping the life courses of young adults. An interpretative analysis of orientations, objectives and solutions
In the following article, we share our findings from the comparative analyses of 54 lifelong learning policy measures implemented in nine European countries, with a particular focus on their orientations, objectives, and solutions devised. Informed by the theoretical framework of Interpretive Policy Analysis (IPA), we have further reasoned on the impacts and unintended effects on young adults’ life course transitions, especially those in vulnerab…
Influencing the other
Knowledge transfer in education has a long history in the field and the broader traditions of comparative and international education. Although the transfer of knowledge across places pre-dates nation-states, the practice rose in importance in the course of the nineteenth century, exerting substantial influence in the shaping of modern national education systems. This chapter first contextualizes the topic in the international research literature…

Contributors explore interactions between structural and institutional contexts of educational trajectories, the individual meaning attached to education and the strategies ado…

O artigo discute alguns dos desafios centrais na atualidade para a comparação com…

Based on different aspects of these frameworks and drawing from extant research, the article presents a typology of education systems that provide varying levels of access to and accessibility of education…
Access to and Accessibility of Education
This article presents analytical considerations for the discussion of issues of access to education and inequality. It first sharpens the concept of access and inequality by pointing to the interplay of structure and agency as well as to processes of social differentiation in which differences are constructed. This implies a critical view on “access” not as something that is simply given in educational systems or as something students “have.” Ref…
