Reimagining Sustainable Transport Through the Urban Metabolism Lens
Urban metabolism (UM) offers a systems approach to the flows of resources in cities, but transportation, even with its high energy, land, and infrastructure requirements, has not been adequately conceptualised in this context. This study examines how transportation has been addressed in UM research and evaluates the added value of applying a UM lens to sustainable transport planning. A multi‐method evidence synthesis is employed, combining biblio…
Investigating the role of preference variation in the perceptions of railway passengers in Great Britain
This study explores the factors associated with passenger satisfaction on the UK railways. To uncover taste variation, the data was segmented into three homogeneous groups of passengers through a latent class ordered logit model, whereby the class allocation was based on observed personal and trip characteristics. The findings suggest that there is significant variation in the impact of service attributes on overall satisfaction across the segmen…
When Covid-19 came to town
Town centres in the economically developed world have struggled in recent years to attract sufficient visitors to remain economically sustainable. However, decline has not been uniform, and there is considerable variation in how different town centres have coped with these challenges. The arrival of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic public health emergency in early 2020 has provided an additional reason for people to avoid urban centres for a s…
Looking through a windscreen
Global car ownership and usage have grown rapidly for several decades now and these trends look set to continue. For car users, the increased mobility afforded by the automobility system is largely welcomed despite the significant externalities produced. The windscreen is one location where controls on automobility are affixed by using artefacts such as paper discs, decals, stickers or digital devices. These artefacts, in turn, have significant m…

Quantifying the impacts of subsidy policies on home-to-school pupil travel by bus in England
In the current economic climate, the British Government is revising a whole range of policy sectors to highlight areas where savings and cuts can be made. The policy of subsidising home-to-school transport for pupils who live beyond a set distance from the school which they attend has been in place since 1944 and this policy costs local authorities in England over £1 billion a year. The aim of this paper is to examine the outcomes of policy choic…
Developing an equitable and sustainable mobility strategy for Havana
The particular political, economic and social conditions of the state of Cuba, in the Caribbean, have created unique possibilities for the development of a sustainable transport system in its capital city, Havana. This paper reports on the outcomes of a project to identify the possibilities and priorities for a long-term strategy for equitable and sustainable mobility for Havana. This involved almost 100 participants from Cuba and the UK in the 1…
Multilevel modelling of Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) trips in Greater Manchester based on area-wide socio-economic data
Providing public transport in areas of low demand has long proved to be a challenge to policy makers and practitioners. With the developing economic, social and environmental trends, there is pressure for alternative solutions to the policy of subsidising conventional bus services. One potential solution is to adopt more flexible routes and/or timetables to better match the required demand. Therefore such 'on demand' or 'Demand Responsive Transpo…

Island Transport, Car Ownership and Use
Car ownership is growing in many countries and this growth results in further car use and increasing emissions – a trend diametrically opposed to a reduction of transport energy and longer term sustainability targets, and a problem that is particularly acute in island states across the world. The aim of this paper is to consider how various contextual factors influence the development of transport systems in four island states. Within this, the p…
